The bolts for the A/C condenser do not line up.

Anyone have any attachment method?

I am thinking of large wire ties.

Not too critical, since it rests under the upper radiator spport and is pinned in by the radiator.

Bikeman982

I did use large wire ties to attach the A/C condenser to the upper radiator support.

Unfortunately the A/C line I got did not work.

The connector to the firewall was the wrong thread.

Also the radiator is not correct.

I got the radiator from a standard and they are different for the automatic (now I know the difference).

I have another radiator and I will use that.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

Today I changed the radiator and put the driver's side fender on.

I also put the bumper support, hood latch, and associated parts together.

I still need to get A/C parts.

What's left is the hood, bumper cover, several broken connectors for the lights, the center airbag sensor and miscellaneous other parts.

The splash guards and wheel well liners also have to be installed.

Fluids need filling - ATF, coolant, windshield washer fluid, etc.

The battery will be last.

Tomorrow I hope to work on it again and I will try to take pictures.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

Yesterday I connected the radiator and filled it with coolant.

I also added ATF to the transaxle and installed the other front fender.

Today I went to the local junkyard and got more parts for this car.

I picked up the driver's side door trim panel, another passenger's side airbag, some air conditioning lines, fender liner (splash guard), O2 sensor, bumper parts, and some other parts.

I also got the connectors for the lights and the windshield washer motor.

I plan on working on the car again on Monday.

The car is mostly together - I will take some pictures.

I wanted to get the center airbag sensor, but it required the "star" tool that I did not have with me.

Bikeman982

I went to the local junkyard today to take advantage of the few 7th generation Corolla donor cars that are still there.

I got another A/C condenser, airbags, the center airbag sensor, an upper bumper support and O2 sensor, door trim panel, plus some misc. items.

Had it been half-price day, I would have taken hood, fenders, bumpers, radiators, door handles, lights, etc.

I never know when those year donor cars will come in and what parts they will have available, so I have limited opportunities.

Tomorrow I plan on working on my 1995 project car again.

More to follow.

Recent pictures -

Shows no hood or bumper.

A/C condenser needs changing, door handle put on, headlight connectors changed, etc.

Notice the different color donor parts.

I tried starting the car and it would not even turn over.

Suspected a bad battery, but a jump did not help.

Changed the battery with another used one and still no start.

Could airbag deployment and sensor changes have affected starting??

More like a low pole.

The owner/driver was drunk.

It was a costly mistake.

I am currently on vacation in San Diego and won't be working on this car until next Monday.

The plan is to change the R-12 A/C condenser with another using R-134a gas.

After that will be trying to get it started.

Still unsure if there is anything special that I have to do to it after an accident and airbags were deployed.

Both airbags (driver's and passenger's side) plus all three sensors (under both fenders and center console) changed.

Anyone know if there is some kind of reset for deployed airbags??

Bikeman982

Today I took a used red bumper from the local junkyard and cleaned it off and painted it blue.

After I clearcoated it, the color changed slightly, so I have to get more paint and some clear clearcoat.

Monday morning I plan on working on the car again.

I have to change the condenser and some connectors and figure out why it is not starting.

The hood and bumper need to go on, but that can wait.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

I got some more paint from AutoZone - Kragen was out - and painted the bumper again.

The color is better, but the paint from Kragen was a shade better.

You can compare the color of the bumper to the hood and notice the difference.

I will repaint again tomorrow, then clearcoat it.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

Here are some more pictures after I painted the bumper with a slightly lighter shade of blue -

I sprayed it with some clearcoating and it is ready for mounting.

Bikeman982

Yesterday I changed the A/C condenser with one from a later model.

Now everything is for the R-134a gas.

I have the painted bumper and will bring that to the car today.

Bman You've made alot of progress on that car......looks great!

There isn't any reset necessary after deployment of airbags. I'd make sure you have constant 12V DC at the big lug on the starter, and at least 8V DC at the small terminal on the starter when the key is in the start position and go from there. If no voltage at the starter, check the underhood fuses and circuit breakers. If the hot wire (from the battery) going to the alternator touched ground in the accident, one of the underhood fuses is spent and will not allow current to the starter.

Thanks,

It is fairly complete.

I didn't think there was anything special for the SRS.

I believe the starting problem is electrical related - bad fuse, relay or wiring.

I will have to check it out.

Owner said it ran, even after the accident, although I don't recall it ever running.

Bikeman982

The battery would not charge with my battery tender - which leads me to think that might be part of the starting problem.

The battery is fairly new, but maintenance free.

Maybe the owner can trade it in for a replacement battery??

Bikeman982

So far I have spent about $1000 for parts and put in over 20 hours on this 1995 Corolla repair.

I have received $1300 for the job (although the owner claims it is $1400).

Unless I get more $$$$, I cannot spend any more time on it.

I have other cars I can BUY/REPAIR.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

No work done on the car.

I am waiting for the owner to reply to my e-mail, or phone me with their decision on what to do with the car.

It will cost them more money for me to continue to work on it.

I know it will cost them much more for someone else to complete the repairs.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

The owner called and said the airbag CEL stays on.

I am done with this car, unless I get more money to work on it.

I still need to bring the hood to the car - anyone have any good transport methods??

The car is 35 miles away and it is mostly highway (speeds of 70-75MPH).

I got it from a donor at a local junkyard (about 6 miles away).

I had it strapped to my roof with tie-down devices and rope.

I also held it down with my hand while I drove (not very comfortable and arm hurting after a few miles).

I would not trust it to stay on my roof for a longer distance at higher speeds.

Should I pay to ship it (UPS for example)??

That would mean boxing it up and an additional expense which I might not get reimbursed for.

I can also borrow a friends van and take it down with that (I would have to pay for gas - not a very fuel efficient van).

I also have a car dolly that I can tow with my car. I can tie the hood down on it.

Anyone know which method would be best??

Bikeman982

Anyone know a safe way to transport a hood??

Bman:

On transporting the hood, since they are pretty easy to remove/install, if you own an identical model corolla, you could remove the hood on corolla 1 at home, drive to the new hood, install it and drive home. Then remove and install on corolla 2. Sounds hokey, but would work, on a sunny day. No worries about hood flying off either. default_wink

With someone to help, probably be about 15-20 minutes wrench time total.

Excellent suggestion of which was one of my ideas as well.

I just wondered how safe/legal it would be for me to drive my car 35 miles without a hood.

Some states it is against the law.

What I would do is to put the repair car hood in place of my cars hood (I have it at my house already - I tied it down to my roof and drove holding it for 6 miles from the junkyard).

Then I would drive to the repair car, take it off and put it on the repair car.

After that, I would have to drive back to my house without any hood.

Once at my house, I would put my original hood back on my car.

It would work and is probably less damaging to the hoods - and a safer transport method.

I am also checking to see how much UPS would cost to just get it delivered.

Bikeman982

The owner called and wants me to continue working on the car (also to bring the hood).

I e-mailed that it would cost more $$$ for my time to finish the car.

The car started up after the battery was replaced and the battery cable (power cable) was repaired.

It had nothing to do with the deployed airbags or the airbag CEL.

More to follow.

Bikeman982

Anyone think I should complete the car for free?

Should I just drop off the hood (I still have my jackstands holding the car up).

I figure I can trade the hood for my jack stands.

If I get more money, I will bring the hood and take my jack stands.

I may even put the wheel well liner and splash guards on.

The door handles (both inside and outside) also need changing.

What is the going rate for backyard auto repairs?

I know mobile mechanics charge a lot more than I do.

The car is not mine, so I have no vested interest in getting it completed.

I am doing the repair for the money, hence no money - no work.
