Guest Prizmer

Hey all, my first post. I'm inheriting a 94 Prizm with 183K on it and the 1.6l engine, from my dad. I'm interested in making it look nicer, it has the lovely "red" paint, that has dulled a lot and look like a chalky red. I'm going to have it repainted, but FMI what causes the issue. With my 88 Olds Cutl**** Supreme, I knew that all older GM w-bodies have an issue with the sun causing a "skin burn" effect that causes the paint to bubble and flake off. From looking at the sppoiler that haas patches of paint left, it looks like the clear coat wore of and left the paint job exposed. When I scratch the paint with my nails I get a bright red paint. but then the next day it turns chalky. What gives, and do I have to completly have the car stripped to fix it?

I've been having the same problem with the paint on the roof of my '93 Corolla.

I believe it is oxidization. Same thing that happens to metal, except its called rust. Waxing didn't seem to help.

I'm having it repainted at the moment. default_cool
