Rr Clunking

by autotech2612, April 27, 2014

Was hearing a clunk in the RR last year on my '02. Changed both rear struts (complete quick assemblies -- new mounts included) this past November and the clunk is still there in RR, and more noticeable now after all these potholes. What else would/could cause this noise?

229,000 miles

Free play in wheel bearing hubs or stabilizer bar links. Check also if all strut mount bolts are tight.

Thanks, dom. I'll update after inspection.

Turns out it really was the RR strut mount. Cheap FCS struts. Went with Monroe. Much nicer ride. All four struts have been replaced with Monroe now.

Nice. These are the Monroe quick struts? Struts and springs already preassembled?

Correct, the quick struts already preassembled.

The FCS struts have a lifetime warranty and I contacted RockAuto about initiating a warranty return. I'd have to ship the struts back to RockAuto at my expense. Upon receiving the struts, RockAuto said they would mail me new ones. I could sell those on Craigs list, but the cost associated with shipping two heavy struts may outweigh the benefit.
