96 Corolla Trunk Problems

Guest jwmacleo

I have been having problems with the trunk of my 96 Corolla for a while now--I can't get it to shut. When I went and got it inspected the stupid mechanic there told me the latch mechanism wasn't working right. Stupider me went to a junkyard and got the new latch parts, put them on, and found out it still doesn't shut. I tried to align the bottom part just right, and it does seem to be aligned (I got in the trunk and got my wife to try and shut it while I watched). Since then I have checked the old part, and found it works fine (hence the mechanic is stupid and I am stupider).

Anyway, I need to figure out how to shut it to pass inspection. It may be out of the original alignment some, but I am not sure of this.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem with their trunk? Any suggestions?

Take it to a body shop not a regular mechanic.

They know how to align parts.

Hey, I haven't seen the "hook" U-shaped piece on your particular car but, You might try removing the mounting bolts and putting a thin washer under each side to raise it just slightly. that would cause it to hook earlier and might work... good luck there... Jim
