98 Corolla Engine Identification...

by nimraj, October 18, 2004

How do I find out if I have a 1ZZ-FE? My engine code starts with N1ZZ-E--- ?

Can I find out from the VIN ? What if the engine is changes. The engine cover says 16valve EFI

I hope to find that out desperately as it has done 78K miles already and it is a 98 Corolla.

I would appreciate the help in identification.

By the way, I am in US and it was manufactured in US.

Sound like you might have a 4/7AFE or 4AGE variant, but the engine code sounds like one for a 1ZZFE. The 1ZZFE have a tubular intake manifold runners - instead of the usual intake "log". Hard to tell just from the VIN - as they vary quite a bit - from USA bound Corollas to one to Europe, Asia, and Australia/New Zealand, and elsewhere.

Take a peek at this page:

If you engine looks like the top one, under the engine section (1994 Corolla example) - then you have a timing belt. Just need to change it.

If you engine looks like the bottom one, under the engine section (1998 Corolla example) - then you have a timing chain. Nothing to change under most operating conditions.

Good Luck.

EDIT:

If it was manufactured in the US and you bought it here - then you should have the 1ZZFE engine.

That was great !!! What a relief.

Now towards making it a "better" car.

1) What size are the speakers Front and Rear ? What is the wattage of the factory music system ? How can i add an MP3 player on it ?

2) It is a CE so it has manual everything except the transmission. Is there a kit which can be put in to make it all power and put alarm system and remote start for the coming winter ?

I already have a 2K Camry LE in addition to the Corolla.

thanks

Try looking at Crutchfield for different audio apllications and power accessories. They supply great instructions and good support.

http://www.crutchfield.com

Even if you don;t buy from them - you can sometimes purchase the instructions separately - if you decide to DIY.

Another good install site is: http://www.installdr.com/ Decent directions there for most cars.

The OEM system (4 speaker/CD) puts out about 10W a channel - about 5-7W of it clean. Upgrading just the speakers will make a big difference. But if you want MP3 - might not be a bad idea to change them all out - since the OEM system doesn't have AUX inputs. You can try going with those RF modulators, but the sound quality is pretty poor.

That was great info.

I will also go in for the tweeters i guess while I am at it.

Thanks,

Nim
