Checking Auto Trans Fluid

by Russ, October 12, 2004

One thing that's oddly missing from the owner's manual on my 2003 Corolla LE is any mention of checking the auto transmission fluid. I've had the car about a month now.

The manuals of my previous cars have always said to check it with the engine warm (but not hot, i.e., after a long trip), idling in neutral or park. Can I assume that the same applies to Corollas?

You can. The fluid basically reacts the same in all cars, as it performs the same function. Go with what you know.

Thanks. Sorry for the late response--I must have missed the email notifcation.

I also have a 2003 Corolla LE with automatic transmission. The ATF dipstick has notches for both cold and hot fluid levels. I check it both ways at least every two weeks; or every other time I check the engine oil which is every time I refuel (which, coincidentally, happens every two weeks). So far, the only ATF my transmission seems to have lost is whatever I've wiped off the dipstick while checking it!
