Power Window Control Failure

Guest raycastro

1998 Corolla with 109,000 miles, and the rear right hand side passenger window now fails to operate from the driver side window switch. It was intermittent for a week, and now it’s inoperable. Rear right hand side passenger window switch works fine.

Possibly related: the driver side door lock rocker switch also fails to operate the door locks. However, that went out about 50,000 miles ago.

Anyone familiar with these issues?

Well I don't know about the corolla specifically but I've seen similar issues on another car. Turned out to be dirty contacts. They're easily cleaned with some contact cleaner... the difficult part is taking apart the door to get to the controls.

It could also be the wires gone bad but that's much less likely IMO. Either way, you'll likely have to open the door (driver one). If you're patient and know a bit about electric circuitry you can try it yourself. Just make sure you keep diagrams of how everything fits together so you can put it back afterwards.

Something new:

In the evening, the window does not operate with either switch. During the day, it operates fine.

Your power window switches are pretty obviously dirty or corroded inside. In the evening, the old grease inside the switch probably cools down just enough to become solid and keep the contacts apart.

Get some stuff called "tuner cleaner" from Radio Shack, remove the switches, and clean 'em out while working them back and forth. You may need to get creative and find a way to open the switches so you can scrape corrosion off the contacts.

Of course, if you have to pry them apart, you may never get them back together again, so you might want to see how much new switches cost before prying them open.
