After Market Catalytic Converter For 2000 Corolla

by JohnO356, February 23, 2006

Looks like my cat is gone, and I plan on getting a new one put on in the next few days. Since the Toyota dealer wants $1400, I'm going aftermarket. Several people I know have had bad luck with aftermarket cats not working with their emission system (not Toyotas), and I don't need that problem since I have my annual emissions inspection coming up next month. If anyone has put a cat on a 2000 Corolla that works ok, please let me know the manufacturer and model nr if you kept a record. I've been to a couple of muffler shops, and they say "should work" not "will work". Thanks.

I have checked with auto parts places like Kragen and they sell converters that are as good as OEM. They also sell cheaper versions and I am not sure about their compatibility with the emission system.

how much are you getting the aftermarket one for?

I paid $100 from Kragen for one of my earlier model Corollas and I put it in myself. It only passes the emission test after I took it to a friend of a friends place.

Check your emissions warranty. Not sure what year the EPA started inforcing auto makers to extend the warranty, but I think it's 7 years 70K miles now.

If not, then check this place out. http://www.randomtechnology.com/products.html It doesn't look like you can get a direct fit one, but a mom and pop shop should be able to install one for ya. I'm acually running one and I passed emissions in Illinois with it.

I was recently faced with the same situation. Midas installed a universal CAT for around $200.00 on my 2002 Corolla. Make sure you tell them you need the round converter rather than the flat in case they need to order it.

I also bought a front Denso 02 sensor (OEM) at a decent price here http://www.densoproducts.com/

Hope this helps.

Besides the shape, what is the difference between the two converters.

I looked at that site, and you're right. The O2 prices are way below Auto Zone. The site doesn't have an option to check shipping/handling charge, though. Was it fair or inflated? A lot of sites are showing low prices, but kick up the shipping/handling charge. Happening a lot on Ebay now. I've seen shipping on Ebay as high as $100.00 for a little item.

I just checked my banking statement to be sure of the total cost including shipping for the front OEM "02" sensor and the total was $95.63. Free shipping and I was very pleased with the transistion and quick service.

That site definitely has cheaper prices for Denso products.
