I will need to get new tires for my 05 LE in about 9,000 miles and the stock Goodyears suck. I decided to start looking now...

I was thinking of changing to a wider tire width.

TRD sells a 225/40-18 tire/rim package, but 2Gs is a bit much and I don't need the bling. ( http://www.trdusa.com/SearchDatabaseResults_home.asp )

Givin the larger TRD tire/rim should fit, I thought to seek a 225mm tire. After visiting 1010tires.com's tire calculator I found 225/55-R15 would be the correct size for me.

The problem I found was the tire I wanted (BFgoodrich Traction T/A) does not come in that size...not many tires to!

So I found the 215/60R15 could work 'in theory'...

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with fitting a different then stock tire size?

yah the goodyear tires are crap. Im also getting the t/a's next time. they have the 225/60/15, what speed difference would that be for you, 1-2mph? the 215/60/15 would look great, that'd look plenty wide. the 225 might look too wide for a corolla since its not a mustang afterall.

I dont know by how much but the 225 tires would decrease your mileage but so would the 215 tires too. I have 195 tires on my automatic and I get 30-32mpg.

Yea, bout 1-2mph... not bad @ all.

I get about 34-36 Mpg now (manual), I am willing to take a bit of a hit to get more rubber to the road.

I was really wondering if there would be any 'fitting in the wheel well problems ????

I will retest my Mpg after I get them.

That would have more bearing on the wheels you plan to use. 215mm will fit the OEM wheel - but it is a tad wider than I would personally use on a 5.5" or 6" wide wheel. If you get a wheel with the correct offset for the width of the tire and don't go too wide - you should be fine.

I was planning on using the OEM rim. BFGoodrich say will fit rims 6" - 7.5" , why do you think it would be too wide for a 6"?

I was told from tirerack and others when buying my tire/wheel set that 205/215 would be too wide for a 6" wheel and that it would be a risk of air collapse when cornering, plus it would wear the tires abnormally also. I believe you can go up to 7 1/2" wheels on the corolla, but I cant remember for sure. a look in tirerack would confirm how wide you could go.

Ok, I worked with a local tire place and had 215/60-15 put on my 05. (BFGoodrich Traction T/A)

First, they have more noise than the stock goodyears.

215/BFGs do seem to skip over bumps in corners. Maybe because they are not broken in enough yet or suspension damping is messed up due to more unsprung weight...

Cornering speed feels to be a bit higher and car feels a bit more planted. Also I can drop the clutch a little harder before they break loose.

Notice everthing was a little change.

I will have some pics soon...

Look at 205-55-15. Lots of choices and it won't screw up your speedo too much.

According to GPS, the speedometer in my 04 Corolla is accurate at 100 Km/hr (62 mph) with 25" diameter tires, as are 195/65-15's.

With 205/60-15' 24.7" diameter, your actual speed would be 0.988% of indicated speed. A 205/55-15' 23.9" diameter would be a bit short at 0.956%. I'm actually on 195/60-15 (24") now which gives me a stronger, shorter final gear ratio, but I will switch to 205/60-15 which is designed for 6" wheels. BFGoodrich's Traction T/A 205/60-15 is rated at 8.2" section width on 6" rim width.

I know for a fact that 205-55-15 looks good on a car with original 195-60-15 tires. I'd think 205-60 would look bulky. The tires would stick out farther from the rim and have the stock height.

I can post pics of my other car sporting 205-55 if ya want. I still have stockers on my Corolla right now.

Like I said, the speedometer is accurate with stock 25" diameter (318 mm radius) 195/65-15 at 100 Km/hr (62 mph), as confirmed by GPS. MR2's tire chart gives you a better comparison if you enter current size as 195/65-15. Also, actual tire diameter can vary as much as 3% between different makes and models of the same tire size.

205/55-15 would look good and work well for sure... BF Goodrich's 23.9" diameter 205/55-15 gives you an actual speed of about 66.92 mph at indicated 70 mph. I just prefer 205/60-15 (24.7": 69.16 mph actual @ 70 ind.) for my purpose on our rough roads.

I have been running a set of 205/60/15 Falken 512's for some time now on my 2005S and cannot fault them at all.

Had to play around with tire pressures for a while but settled on 32psa which is just fine.

They stick like glue in the rain and ride well overall. If you like chucking your car into fast tight turns they do take a moment to settle into the turn but nothing you don't get used to.

I ran 205-60x15 Michelins for about 130,000km and now have 215-55x16 Michelin Hydroedge tires on my 03 Corolla S> I love it.

205/55R15 traction t/a worked great on my old 1997 saturn sl2. Performance and appearance were enhanced with little change in gas milage or speedo/odemter error. Gas milage was decreased due to the enjoyment of driving. The overall diameter is smaller so that will have the effect similar to taller gears with a better launch in accelaration.

ok guys when you change width your supposed to change sidewall aspect as well.so you change to 205/60-15 then to 215/55r15 to keep every thing the way it was.and improve handling and traction.

I got my Matrix w 235/45r17 on Enkei wheels.Thing stick to the road and have seen others towed in with these tires in a manual trans with broken/burnt parts trying to spin them.

The issue with those is that you "need" to realign the rear with shims to get max wear from the tires.

And you do need to do a 4 wheel alignment with the extra cost of shims for that perfectly straight ride.

I have an '06 S with stock tires & caps on the 15" rims. Personally, I think I will end up going with 16" rims and 205/50 or 205/45 tires. I can't see any reason for 215's or even 225's unless I was running more serious suspension and 17" rims or larger.
