Engine Swapping

say you had a corolla 98+ and you wanted to do an engine swap, does any one know how much room is in the engine bay? how big of an engine you might be able to fit with out having major mods? 2.0? 2.2?

I have no idea, but I have another question. How dificult is it to swap out in a 1994 the 1.8L engine to replace the 1.6L? Anything major required and do the mounts and everything line up? Anyone know??

Monkeywrench Racing has some options for people running the ZZ powerplants - http://monkeywrenchracing.com/.

You could run an oversized pistons (82mm vs 79.5mm) to bump up the displacement of the existing engine to almost 2.0L. That would get you the largest engine displacement with no modifications to the existing mounts or fabrication to any body related parts.

As for engines in general - how big of an engine will fit is a function of your budget. There are several groups overseas that have popped a 2.0L 2SGTE into newer Corollas. Some of them have put in the 2JZGTTE from a twin turbo Supra and then converted the Corolla into a RWD platform.

Depends on which 1.8L engine you were looking at - the 7AFE from the earlier Celicas and Corollas or the 1ZZFE/2ZZGE from the more recent MR2, Celica, Matrix, and Corolla groups?

You also have the 1.6L 4AGE available as a viable swap as well - though more pricey and harder to find. But better tuning potential and design features that make it more attractive than the standard fare 4AFE and 7AFE engines.

Luckily - the 4AFE and 7AFE share similar blocks - your exisitng mounts should work with the 1.8L. Basically the least problematic swap - depending on where the donor engine is sourced. Be much easier to work with a halfcut from a donor car - will need the ECM from the larger engine and associated wiring harness. Any other parts - axles, vacuum lines, emissions equipment, etc. can also be brough over without too much extra work - since you will have everyhting there. The rest can be parted out and resold.

I was thinking like an integra gs-r engine 1.8L or like if it was possible like a prelude 2.2l engine

You could do that - but you are looking at some serious fabrication work. If you outsource that - would prbably be not worth the effort, cost-wise - especially if you are cross swapping engines from different lines like that. Connectors / some parts wise always better to stick with components from the same company.

What is the difference between the 1.6L 4AFE and the 4AGE? How does the 7AFE engine compare? Is the ECM the engine computer module? Does that change depending on the engine used? Will the 1.6L ECM work on a 1.8L engine? Is the wiring also different?

The 1.6L 4AFE and 1.8L 7AFE are very similar in design - other than the increased displacement of the engine. The 4AGE is a Yamaha designed "sportier" variant of the 4AFE engine - different head design, stronger components, oil squirters for the pistons, etc. ECM is the engine control module or sometimes referred to an ECU - will be different for different engines, transmission, and model years. You can swap ECM/ECU around from one engine to another - if it will work correctly is another issue. They used preprogrammed air/fuel maps that depend on known engine parameters - change engine breathing, displacement, fuel injector flow rates and the whole mix will be thrown out incorrectly. Wiring would be similar - but chances are good that they will be different - also depends on options, transmission type, engine code, model year, etc.

so probably a good swap for a coroolla would be like a newer celica engine?

If you mean the 2ZZGE swap - then yes. Actually has been done a few times - 1ZZFE powered Corolla swapped with a 2ZZGE from a Celica GT-S or Matrix GT-S along with the 6-speed transmission. Not an easy swap - but can be done. Cost varies depending on your source. Some have done the swap for less than $5K - for some, it would be cheaper to trade in the current Corolla for the 2005 Corolla XRS with the 2ZZGE engine and 6 speed already.
