Idle Speed...

by Whistler, February 9, 2005

What speed does your car idle at? Sometimes mine revs at under 1000 rpm and sounds a bit like a VW diesel. I never really thought anything of it until a friend said that it sounded bad, so now I'm wondering if its normal for Corollas.

What year is your car?? It seems to be a farily common problem for the 03+ models to idle low and cause a rough idle, cold mine sits around 1800 rpm....mine drops to 400-600 rpms once its warmed and has been driven for a while....under 1000 is very very common for my car once its warm, its annoying as hell, one of my issues with this car.... default_tongue

Cold, mine idles above 2k, loud and embarrassing. Warm, it drops to around 600, and sounds rough and vibrates the car some. I'm getting hints of a serpentine belt squeal at low idle, but until the stealership can duplicate the problem, they ain't touching it.

Bout 1800 startup, then when warm, about 750 in drive.

i have a 95 DX. mine start about 1600-1800 when it is cold. more cold = higher idle. when the car is warm enough, it idles around 600-800. sometimes there are noises from the engine like the thing is shaking. I just turn on the headlights and the rpm increases and the noise stops

My 1999 idles 1200-1400 cold and 650 warm and it is smooth as glass.

my 05 runs between 1800-2000 cold, around 850 warm.

Its an 03.

Ya thats what it seems like for me. I just went for a coffee run to double check things. It was -2 degrees C out, car started up at about 2000 rpm in park. I left, and by the time I got to the Tim Horton's drive through (I took the long way default_laugh ) the car was at operating temp.

When I was sitting at the window waiting for my order, the car was idling at around 500-600 rpm, making the VW diesel like idle noise. I've also noticed a similar diesel noise at idle on a few 01+ Honda Civics.

BTW - I also had a squeeling serpentine belt at low idle during the summer, but that got fixed by the dealer.

'03 Corolla LE automatic, idle is 1700 RPM cold; around 650 hot. My engine sounds like a smoothly ticking Rolex. No drama whatsoever.

1700-1800 cold (I would prefer 1500-1600)

750-800 warm, with short 5 seconds blips at 1200 when the AC compressor kicks in.

500-600 seems too low.

Is it easy to adjust idle speed on these EFI cars?

That might cure the noise and vibrations some are experiencing.

No, the AIS motor controls the idle speed and there's no screw that allows adjustment. The AIS is controlled by the PCM.

My '03 Corolla idled at around 1800-2000 cold, and 700-900 warm.

My '03 Accord 4 cyl. idles at 1600-1800 cold, 600-800 warm.

My '01 Kawasaki ZX9R has a manual choke and idles at 2000-3500 with the choke on and 1000-1200 normal idle. Idle sometimes climbs a little in hot weather.
