Air Fuel Sensor

by busayo, October 28, 2013

what is the difference between the air fuel sensor and the oxygen sensor

Think of the air fuel sensor as a wideband O2 sensor. It measures air/fuel ratios over a much wider range and resolution than what a conventional O2 sensor can do. Hence the higher price and slightly reduced lifespan of the AFR sensor vs the O2 sensor. The two sensors are unfortunately, not interchangeable.

Most newer cars come with the AFR sensor for better engine efficiency and emissions performance. On cars that originally had a conventional O2 sensor - you cannot use an air fuel sensor, as its signal output is not compatible with the stock ECM. Though some aftermarket standalone engine management systems can take advantage of the higher resolution provided by such a sensor.
