Hard Shifting On 2000 Corolla

by sam, November 16, 2004

I had to replaced the clutch on my 2000 corolla .

Somtimes, mostly when its cold outside( 50 f) and the car is cold it is hard to shift( kinda feels like when the sycros would go out on my old bug) , but no gear grinding , just takes more preasure than normal to put into gear. It happends in first, second and third, but mostly in third. It only happens every so often, comes and goes.

The clutch feels normal and fully disengauges when pushed in.

I did lube the trans input shaft when I installed the clutch, but I used an after market clutch set.

Thanks , Sam

Chances are it is not the clutch or throw-out bearing. It sounds more like some binding or play in the shift control cable(s) or connected components to the cable. If a clip or bushing is worn on the cables ends or in the shift lever assembly - it will feel like the trans will refuse to go into gear. That would also explain some of the intermittent behavior of the hard shifting.

Good Luck.

Thanks fishexpo101, I will check the shift control cables and related components .

Thanks,Sam
