Normal Oil Consumption

Guest jpond

I just purchased a used 98 Corolla with 154,000 Kilometers.

I have had it for a couple of weeks now, and have clocked approximately 2000 Kms(mostly highway) on the odometer.

It has used nearly 1 litre of oil during this time period.

Is this normal?.......Normally, for all my other vehicles, I do not have to add any oil between oil changes.

The car works fine, lots of power, and doesn't appear to be smoking.

Also, there are no signs of oil leaks that I have noticed.

Is this normal? Is there anything I should check?

Thanks,

Jason

That kind of oil consumption - Toyota would consider "normal" especially when driven at highway speeds. Personally - I find that high for the amount of mileage on the car. Things to check are PCV valve is in working order - if defective, will lead to excessive oil consumption. Do you know the vehicle's service history? May have leaking valve guides or worn piston rings - leading to excessive oil consumption. I would start tracking its oil consumption and see if it gets better or worse. Sometimes switching to a synthetic motor oil will help reduce oil consumption if you drive mostly highway speeds, definitely help with cold weather startups.

Good Luck.
