Just Turned 160,000 Miles

My 1994 turned 173,000 today when I was driving it.

I expect it will last many more miles.

I drive a 2005 Toyota Corolla CE that was purchased in 2004 for the 2005 model year. So far it has 166K. Lets see what has happened to it, almost over rev'd when I was stuck in snow, drove about 5km with no trans fluid, no 4 tires are presently alike.

My 2000 Corolla VE was sold in 2004. When it hit 156K.

 

That's a lot of driving. Unless you bypassed the ECU, it will prevent the engine from over revving.

It was probably just revving high, but not moving anywhere. It seems like the engine will blow due to the noise, but that would be normal at high speeds.

 

 

My last Toyota was a 1987 Pickup with a 22R 5 speed. It had 480,000 miles when I sold it (big mistake) and the valve cover had never been off it. It still ran good and strong and only burned a little bit of oil, about a quart every 1500. The original clutch was replaced at 450,000 miles because it was slipping a little when towing my 19' bass boat up steep grades. My current Toyota is a 2002 Corolla CE, 3 speed auto. It has 99,000 miles on it now, still runs like brand new and doesn't use any oil to speak of. If it goes half as long as that pickup I'll be happy. I don't know if the 1.8L motor is as bulletproof as the 22R but I'm assuming it is. As far as I know a Toyota with 160,000 miles is just getting broke in good.

That's what I think. I am hoping the 1.8L motor will last forever.

 

I have seen some that broke thru the block due to a broken crank or bearing.

Try telling someone not familiar with a Toyota that they can go for many miles and most won't believe you, since they are used to American cars that are lucky to get 100,000.

I am trying to sell my 1997 and people are interested - until they hear that it has over 230,000 miles on it, then it's goodbye!

My 1994 daily driver has almost 177,000 on it now.

Should I think about changing the timing belt at 180,000??

Is that the original belt or was it replaced sometime earlier? If it looks good I guess I'd keep it. If its cracked I'd replace it.

It is the same belt that it had when I bought the car from e-bay about 2 1/2 years ago.

 

I have not looked at the belt, but thought that preventive maintenance suggested it be changed every 60k miles.

That would make 180k an interval of 60k and time for a new belt.

Personally, I will look at it and see if it needs changing, rather than change it regardless.

I have 178,000 on the car now - that makes about 1,000 miles a month.

That's only about 12,000 a year.

I figure the car will last for 10 more years!!

Have they replaced the engine/tranny or any major parts?

Its had the engine replaced... original trans though.

The manual recommends preventative maintenance to change it every 60K miles.

my general rule is to change it out every 100k miles.

car companies say 60k miles (100k km), so that they have insurance before teh belt breaks.

i had a buddy (gf's brother) that was an engineer at a belt company. he said that belts were designed to last up approx 200k km, but may last upto 300k km (200k miles). his suggestion was to change it at 100k miles (160k km) to be on the safe side.

my 98 is ready for a new belt (& water pump) too. 200k miles.

sorry, i just realized that i am consistant in my use of km/miles. live in the us, but deal with metric a lot...

Well, if the belt was changed at 120K (miles), then I should change it by 220K?

 

I have just gone over 180,000 miles and it should be close to change time.

Maybe after I get another car to use while I work on it.
