i've gone 155mph in a 95 lexus SC400 with a friend and gotten caught by the CA highway patrol...they let me off with a warning.

i pegged the speedo in my 03 corolla LE on the 73 south just past the 55 interchange in irvine

i pegged the speedo in a 93 lexus es300 - about 140 +/-5 mph

my friend took me for a ride in his 450 whp Stage3 turbo rsx-s, we covered 50-160mph in around 10-14 sec. default_blink

I don't go much above 80 in my 1994, mostly because I don't need a speeding ticket.

I was *allegedly* going 115mph in a 89 Cavalier (125hp 2.8L V6, 3spd auto); speedometer maxed out of 85, and the person I was keeping up with said they were goign 115.

Other than that, I hit 111mph in a 00 Accord (150hp 2.3L I4, 4spd auto); got on the freeway at mile 18 and off the freeway at mile 20. I've been 100mph in that car a few times, for no reason other than because I could.

My 01 Corolla has not been driven faster than 71mph (by me).

i hit 110 down a hill today, on the flat that short 4th gear kills anything over 95mph.

Think about it, why would you gear an economy car to perform over 95 MPH?

I topended an 85 Camaro onetime. I'd tell you how fast, but the speedo wouldn't read over 85 in them days. I was also young and stupid. Now I rarely go obver 75, which I consider a safe interstate cruising speed. The car may feel smooth at 90+ MPH, but when you need to manuver, or worse, stop, you will regret it. Take it from an old guy, if you want to drive like that, try to find a track to do it on. The only thing worse than killing yourself would be killing someone else.

the stopping part i have down, i dont follow anyone close, the turing part...ya at 90 i wouldnt try to turn any car. the brakes on my car work amazingly well, i can slow from 90 faster than the speedo needle can fall.

i honestly dont usually drive that fast but on this particular road it was 90 with the fast lane or 65 with the trucks and i just wanted to get the heck home!

as a member of that high-risk under-20 demographic, I've quickly realized that speeding/agressive driving is pointless and should be avoided. just in a year of driving, there were too many times where if the brakes had locked up, or the road wasn't dry, or that cop wasn't going somewhere, and so on, I would've been screwed.

by not driving agressively & following speed limits, I've been a calmer person in general. Instead of pAssing people that are so rude as to go only 36 in a 35 limit, I follow and hope there's a cop ahead. Regardless of how unnecessarily low some speed limits may be (there are a lot of flat 2-lane roads here that are 35mph because of a one-limit-fits-all-roads law stating so.)

it's fun to watch idiots in hummers tailgate and then pass you on 35mph two lane residential streets in no pAssing zones on a hill (while you're doing <40 in a known speed limit enforcement area), just to have to slow down 1/4 mi later.

drivers like that *almost* make me wish there were more speed cameras here in the usa.[

the only place my car goes over 60 is the open highway with the rest of the traffic, i never do more than 5 over on surface streets and in the rain or snow i do the limit or less.

Been up to 135 in a Ford Thunderbird SC - at that point to go any faster you have to push harder on the gas, then it downshifted and redlined itself! Not a great design in that regard, and those engines had to be replaced frequently, but fun if you didn't have to pay the bills.

The Neon would easily do 110 without any feelings of instability - nice cornering / handling in that car. The Corolla would also exceed 100 - I think I went to 105 or so - never tried to hit the top speed in most of my cars.

I had a Spirit R/T that was scary on acceleration (225 hp, 240? lb-ft torque, five-speed stick, five-seats, four doors! with 0-60 in 5.8 stock) but handled high speeds fairly well. Didn't feel like it was doing much in the way of engine work at 100 but the wind sure got it. Not aerodynamic...

Used to go insane speeds all the time in a '76 Valiant with a 318 - pegged the speedo at something over 100 routinely - found it was rough between about 75-85 but if you were above or below, it was fine. Still, that was just plain stupid given the tires and suspension. Good reason to give kids Tercels! (Nice comfy cars with good acceleration...but a top speed as I recall of about 80-85.)

I never drove aggressively, just excessively default_wink -- no tailgating, no weaving incessantly. I plan lane changes for the long term and make a point of not making others hit their brakes. Now I don't drive nearly as fast as I used to and haven't been over 100 in quite a while, because you can't trust the donut-eating, cellphone-yappin' morons in their Expeditions and Yukons and such any more than the teens in their VWs and Civics. In populated areas, yup, the speed limit as posted. Can't trust kids to not pop out into the road! and once you get one, you don't want to lose it to some dumb yuk who's pretending to be Richard Petty outside your house...or some egotistical maniac in a luxury car or SUV who thinks they need to be a foot off your rear bumper at all times.

The car probably just had a speed limiter on it. I'm sure it could do more.

Best I've done is 165 in a 96 3000GT VR-4... this was before we worked the motor over, and there were huge tears in the intercooler hoses... those cars are scary fun, and I'm kind of glad I don't own one default_smile

I had my 2001 rolla up to ~105 a couple times in the mountains in colorado..

My friend has a slighty modded TT Stealth (same car) and that thing was fast. Extreamy fast and nimble with the sport suspention on for the weight of the car. I'd love to see that engine in something lighter. Or the biggest sleeper would be a Diamonte Wagon The engine and drivetrain fits default_smile I'm not going to build one, but that would be awsome!!!

You don't want one tho unless you have a full garage full of tools and work on cars. The engine bay is cram packed and I helped remove the trans in one for a clutch change. I think you can get parts for the trans now, but at the time, the trans was unservicable default_sad I almost bought a 92 once. I had the loan aproved and everything, but I found out at the last moment that the 93 bottom end was way stronger. Also, the active spoiler was broken and parts cost a lot and working on it is a major pain in the ***!!!!!! I still have a Galant VR4, so I wasn't out much by not getting it.

I've had my 2006 CE up to around 95 and it seemed to still have some juice left. My dad has a 1966 Pontiac GTO with 3 dueces and 4 on the floor... I've had that thing up to about 115 or so, reducing it's steller 7-9 m.p.g. to around 2 or 3.

I'd imagine our corolla is limited at 110-115 range. It's to keep the car in a class, and because of the tires on the car. If your speedo shows more, it's probably wrong. The fastest I've ever gone in a 1.8l was 120 and that was going down a slight hill. On a flat road, I could never get the thing over 115. That was in a Escort GT with a DOHC mazda engine. The same one that was used in the MX-5. The only 4cyl production car that is really going to be able to go faster is a turbo, or some of the old Porsche 924s and 944s. I don't know what my turbo car can do (stopped in the 135 range, but it still had more in it), but the SRT-4 can do 155. I only did that once cause I got a new set of Z rated tires and I wanted to know what the car could do, but the ramps started to come by too fast and I was afaid of getting busted. The road was empty and I didn't want to meet any cops that night. I've never done that again. Even with the power and tires, I don't go much over 90 anymore. I still like adding power to my car, but I like taking off fast way more then I like top speeds. Getting pushed in the seat and building up kneck mucles is way cooler then going fast. Any jack ###### can go over 100 now. Only a few can do it in about 13 seconds.

In my 2000 Corolla LE, 110.25 mph, on completely flat terrain. Actually I'm not sure if that was the actual speed or if it was more like 111-112 because the speedometer may have pegged.

Location and conditions: I-5 in Kern County (completely straight), sunny weather, slight breeze, probably 10 miles+ visibility and a more than 1/2 mile gap in traffic. Tires rated for 118 mph. The car handled fine, wasn't shaking or anything. Only maintained top speed for a second or two. Had to slow down because although I had an open lane, there was another vehicle in the other lane and I would not dare go that fast with any vehicles in ANY other lanes beside me -- it's just not worth the risk...nor would I do this for any extended period of time because a sudden gust of wind could cause problems since there's much less margin for error. I just wanted to see if the car could reach this speed without being Assisted by gravity (downhill). Actually, now that I know it can, I'm unlikely to do this again.

Does anyone know if the '00 Corolla has a limit? There's no visible peg, but is there an internal peg that would have prevented the speedometer from showing a higher speed if I had continued accelerating? Is there an electronic speed limiter that kicks in at maybe 115 or 120 mph? Just curious, and I'd rather not find out experimentally.

The 8th gen Corollas have a 115MPH speed limiter built-into the ECU. Depending on trim level - may not see that in the gauges (electronic gauges generally will not "keep" going like mechnical gauges past - they have a programmed stop).

Some have gotten up to 118MPH - but the ECU will pull injector duration and spark to prevent you from going any faster (OEM injectors are already at 90% duty at indicated redline - going suddenly lean at that RPM is very bad news). That is about the fastest I've seen in stock Corollas. Also note that Toyota has a little slop in the speedo at that speed - as much as 15-17MPH off occording to specs. The fastest verified speed trapped speed I've seen for a Corolla was 101MPH at the local track.

If it's an electronic gauge, shouldn't it be fairly accurate? Hmm, maybe I'll take my GPS receiver and see how much error it gets. I know that at up to 50 mph, the GPS and the gauge are in agreement to within 1 mph.

Not always - plus you also have to account for errors introduced by tire distortion at high speed. I've monitored my speed with a GPS as well - and at 85MPH was accurate to with in 2 MPH (speedo read on the high side).

Seems like everyone who posted on this thread has vilated the speed limit at one time or another. My Corolla could go faster than any of yours but I don't want to show off. Let's all meet at one place and have a race!

in my '05 corolla xrs i got it to about 120-125mph. i was losing torque and my exit was coming up. handled the speed and highway turns very well.

why would you think that any of your corollas would be faster than any other corolla/prizm. from a roll im confident that i could keep pace with a 5spd model of my car or possibly even an automatic 1zzfe corolla/prizm.

You guys are lame, I had my Contour doing 100 regularly on my way down to detroit. I hit 115 and the limiter kicked in... Car was smooth as butter going 100, I tried to do 70 the whole way, but sometimes I would look down at my gauge cluster and be hitting 90 and not even realising it. Man I love that car...

Have you looked at your new Corolla yet? My 2005 LE's speedometer only goes to 110 MPH. I have driven the car that fast once, and I must say that it is not a plesant feeling. The Contour was fine at that speed. The thing is you are talking about 165 HP 2.5L V6 vs. 130 HP 1.8L I4, and 205/55R15 tires vs. 195/65R15 tires. You are also comparing two cars with suspensions tuned for different things. Remember that a Contour is a European designed car that in Mondeo trim is meant to cruise on the Autobahn and Autostrata. A Corolla is a Japanese designed car which is made to be reliable, efficient and economical to operate. Comparing a Corolla to a Contour isn't apples to apples.

The stock corolla tires are horrible and I wouldn't want to go over 100MPH with them. I wouldn't want to be next to anyone else on the road with lousy tires tying to go over 100MPH either. The Corolla suspention is safe enough, but if you want to speed, please get better tires.

I don't even like to speed in the Corolla. Mainly because it's not a fast car, the ECU is tunned for economy and I got the car for economy. I also want the car to last a long time, so it gets driven nicly.

my tires speed rating is faster than the car can go default_tongue
