How does QUAKER STATE ULTIMATE DURABILITY OIL compare to PENNZOIL PLATINUM.Are they both high quality oil.

Is the Quaker State oil on the thick or thin side.

Any info would be great.

In which viscosity grade? 0W-20 ? 5W-20 ? 0W-30 ? 5W-30 ?

They are nearly identical in the 5W-30 grade.

Pennzoil actually owned Quaker State back in the early 90's - then Shell took over in the early 2000's. There are diehard fans of both.

From a chemistry and viscosity standpoint, they are pretty similar. There is some anecdotal evidence floating around on BITOG that Pennzoil might have a better base stock vs Quaker State, but QS compensates by putting a more robust add pack. Others have noted that since the VOAs are so close, chemically, might assume that they are actually the same oil in different retail packaging.

Hard to say with any certainty unless you take on the testing yourself, VOA is not always gospel truth, as it only checks a fraction of the possible constituent components, not all. Looking at both oils in the current SN API - if I'd have to pick from those two - I'd just pick the one that was the least expensive.

Quaker State's reformulated (2013) proprietary moly formula of its Ultimate Durability synthetic oil shows well here in PQIA's recent 0W-20 test results... Over 3 times the regular amount of moly, with a healthy dose of calcium, and with a very low boron level, if that matters.

That is a surprising amount of moly for PCMO - that is great to know, as that could make a great oil for some engines known for excessive metal on metal contact.
