Today, I started my car and put it in gear. Nothing happened. I can move the gear shift stick back and forth with ease and nothing happens. The car does not go in any of the gears. It's like the stick is free and won't click into gear. I would love to advice on what is probably wrong with the car.

Also, any advice on a recommended type of repair shop would also be greatly appreciated. I will need to get the car towed and the Toyota dealership is too far away.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I should also let you know it's an automatic transmission.

how old and what mileage

The car is 10 years old and has 145,000 miles.

It's probably just a broken shifter cable end... I've seen it somewhere else lately. It's part of the cable which has to be replaced, if it's the same in your case. Look at where the shifter cable hooks up to your gear selector lever's mechanism.

Was your trasmission fluid replaced every 60,000 miles, by the way?

A broken shifter cable sounds a lot better than replacing the transmission. I was worried it was the transmission but I have not had any problems shifting gears before this incident.

Yes, I have kept up with replacing the transmission fluid about every 60,000 miles.
