Valve Adjustment Needed For 2003 Corolla ?

By bhp02, September 20, 2013

when do you need one ? what are the symptoms ?

mine has 220 k. kms

Valve lash clearance adjustment is required when they are out of specified range... Service manual calls for an audible valve clearance inspection at every 48 months/64,000 kms (40,000 miles).

Inlet: 0.15 - 0.25mm

Exhaust: 0.25 - 0.35mm

I adjusted all 16 valve clearances at 160,000 kms (100,000 miles) at or close to minimum spec, with 7 new lifters and by switching the others around. All were still within spec range, but some were close to maximum clearance spec and ticking a bit. All valve clearances had increased slightly since checked at 100,000 kms (60,000 miles). Valve clearances don't tend to decrease on this engine, which is a good thing. A lack of valve clearance reduces valve heat transfer which can cause damage. Excessive clearance is noisy. Engine starts and runs better and more efficiently with all valve clearances set equally and within spec, for optimal valve lift, duration, and resulting overlap, compression, vacuum, flow, etc.

14-005 valve clearance (1zz-fe) adjustment

sounds like I need them adjusted or checked.

Did you do it yourself or garage, and if so, how much did you spend ??

thanks

I did it myself... You have to measure clearances and remove camshafts to see which lifters you have before you can decide which replacement lifters to get. Valve lifter thickness is clearly marked underneath, and matches actual micrometer measurement. A "49" marked under lifter for example means it's 5.49mm thick. Original lifters can be in 0.01mm increments, and replacement lifters are available in 0.02mm increments. You'll need a metriic feeler gauge to measure clearances before removing cams.

7 new lifters and valve cover gasket cost about $120.

Lifter # 13751-22040 = 5.06mm... # 13751-22380 = 5.74mm
