Corolla 2000 Ve Maintenance

by fedecape, May 15, 2013

Hi !

I just wanted to ask a few engine-maintenance questions.

I bought my car 3500 miles ago and I have only changed the oil (transmission, power steering and differential fluids were also refilled).

1) What OIL should I ask for? I'm currently running on Castrol Part Synthetic 5w-30

I live in South Miami, a really hot place.

3) How do I check if the coolant is "fine"? or.. just buy more? Which one?

I added some Chevron Fuel System cleaner the last time I fueled the tank.

4) Any other recommendable product to buy and apply?

5) Tips? Anything that I should check or have checked often ?

130K miles, about 300 miles per tank and seems to be burning about 1QT of oil every 2500 miles.

Thanks!

You could try using Castrol GTX High Mileage 10W-40, especially in the summer to reduce oil consumption, and maybe 5W-30 in winter if it's not as hot then. They are also part synthetic.

If it has 5-year long-life coolant that is over 5 years old, it should be replaced... Hard to tell by just looking at it.

Check level in expansion tank. (Hot and Cold lines) You can also check if it's full at pressure cap when engine is completely cooled down.

Were spark plugs and primary O2 sensor ever replaced?

Are you using E10 (10% ethanol) 87 PON (pump octane number RON+MON/2) gas? Have you tried ethanol-free 91 PON gas, especially in extreme heat conditions and at close to sea level? Mine runs so much better, stronger, and more efficiently on ethanol-free 91, I'm sticking with it.

The next oil change should be in about a week. I'll ask for Castrol 10w-40. Thank you!

About the Coolant. I have no idea about its age. This morning, when the engine was 100% cooled down (about 10 hours off) the level mark was like 1 inch below the FULL mark.

I guess they were replaced, but I don't really know. I'll change the spark plugs myself. Shouldn't be so difficult. Any tip/suggestion?

About the fuel.. I fuel about twice a week at BJ's (membership club, Sam's / Costco kind).

I use the premium one, 93 octane. There's a sticker stating "May contain up to 10% Ethanol".

Any Gas brand that still sells Ethanol-free fuel?

Thank you verrrry much!

You mean Castrol GTX HIGH MILEAGE 10W-40 oil.

Original plugs are Denso # 3324 {SK16R11} Iridium. I like my Bosch # 4501 Platinum IR (Iridium) Fusion.

Part Synthetic or Full Synthetic?

Castrol GTX Migh Mileage is a quality synthetic blend oil. Another is Valvoline Maxlife - also another quality synthetic blend. They both offer full synthetics of the High Mileage variants at a higher price point, but these blends are so good, hard pressed to find something better for the price. They key is finding the oil that works within your budget, oil change interval, and what your car seems to like best.
