Brake Lights Not Working

Guest michaelpatt

The left and right rear brake lights on my 1998 Corolla do not work when the brake pedal is depressed. However, the center brake light in the spoiler DOES work properly. Anyone have an idea about what might be happening?

Sounds like you have bulbs with double filaments. The higher output wattage filament has burned out and so the bulb goes dark when you press the brake. The lower wattage filament lights up when the brake pedal is released.

Replace bulbs. See owners' manual for bulb type.

Thanks Ghost! Your post made sense to me. I got replacement bulbs per the owners manual and replaced stop light bulbs on both sides. Everything is working fine now. And to think I could have taken the car in to my friendly Toyota dealer where they would have charged me 14.99 for the bulbs and 32.50 to put 'em in...

Hah.

Thanks for sharing the dealer price on replacing those.

Glad to help.

Reminds me... I have a license plate bulb out that I need to change.
