I just pulled the front tire for the first time on my '95, and noticed that when I pulled the tire off the lugs, I could move the rotor slightly in and out (towards and away) from the hub. The only thing that seemed to be holding the rotor in place was the caliber/pads.
Does this sound right????
Yup! They are supposed to be like that. The caliper and pads, torque plate, and wheel are what holds the rotor to the hub. Usually, the rotor is frozen to the hub (corrosion) so most don't even notice it.

Much thanks!

Definitely floating.
As long as eveything is in place - they don't float too far.
Easy to change them and also to take them off and have them "turned", when doing brakes.
