2005 Gear Oil Change Procedure

by ElvisPresley, July 20, 2009

can someone pint me to a link for above? I think i found the drain plug and filler plug, but want to make sure.

These pics came from 9thgencorolla - just rehosted them on my photobucket account so you can see the pics.

Fill plug - refilling

Note: Before you attempt this - make sure you have a 24mm socket, double check that it will fit both the fill and drain plugs. *Important* - Make sure you can loosen the fill plug before you drain the transaxle. Too many times, I see someone drain the gear oil only to find out that the fill plug was seized solid. Takes about 2 quarts to refill it. You check the fill level by sticking you finger in the fill hole. Keep filling it up until it just touches the bottom of the fill hole, or starts to run out.

thanks

I had guessed right. The tips are very helpful, too.

is there a magnet on the end of the drain plug or elsewhere?

Magnetic drain plug - not from the factory, unless they changed something for the 2005 model year. Probably not a bad idea to have one - but if you drain in on a pretty regular interval - I don't think you'll have too much to worry about. More likely to chew up a brass scyncro than grind off metal off a gear or spin a bearing. Speaking of syncros, they were updates after the 2003 model year for 2004 - your car would have the beefier syncros.

What were you planning to fill the transaxle with? OEM, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, Redline, etc.

i have a pdf which shows an exploded view of the transmission, and there is a magnet--although i don't know if it is accessible.

i bought amsoil. Local hardware store has it fro 9 bucks a quart. i bought three quarts, not realizing i only needed two.

so far I've had zero problems with my car. It's at 60k.

thanks,

Ben

does the car have to be leveled when refilling?

^^^ As level as you can get it.

I'm about to do this again--it's been a long time so i can't remember if i have to put new washers on every time. Do I? If so, can i get another kind of washer at the auto parts store. what is on there looks like a solid aluminum washer and i don't know if they carry them.

I'm at 100k no and the only problem i've had with this car is a corroded brake piston in the front causing the brake to stick. Not a biggie, but that's the only problem I've had.

Ben

If you replaced the washer the last go around - might still be in good enough shape to reuse. All depends on how much it was torqued and how distorted the washer is. Given the interval between changes, doesn't hurt to get another one - just to avoid any issue with leaking.

A 15/16" (23.8125mm) socket works as well.

Magnet is inside transaxle case near output shaft front bearing.

I did stick a strong neodymium magnet on my drain plug, which collects a fair amount of fine metal shavings between 40,000 mile gear lube changes.

Amsoil's MTG is perfect for our manual transaxle.
