Giving Up

by erffuller, January 16, 2009

My 2001 CE has no (or very little) compression on #3 cylinder.

I cannot deal with this. More money than I have to replace or

repair the thing, and beyond my ability to do it my self.

The car (other than the engine) is in good shape. Everything else

works, the air is cold.

Does anyone have an idea what would be a fair price under the

cercomstance? Its located in Salem Or.

Would really appreciate any input. And I would like it to go to

someone with the abliity to fix it or use its parts, rather than just

taking it to a salvage yard.

try idling it for a little while with some seafoam then changing the oil, see if the compression comes back some. those years were noted for sticking rings.

Thank you, I'll give the seaform a try. I say on another thread a detailed

explanation from seafoam on how to do that.

it may not bring it back 100% but it could help some. on my gf's last escort it brought back 90psi of compression on one low cylinder!

If SeaFoam doesn't work, you may want to try Auto-Rx. It also cleans ring packs very well, but it takes much longer (at least a few hundred miles of driving).

You can find used 1zzfe engines for cheap! Just swap it out. That is of course, you like your 01 corolla. My 98 got rear ended, so for now, my brother and I are driving his 02 330i until I get my 00 celica gt-s. I was unfortunate enough that my frame and chassis was tweaked, but my engine was in pretty good condition. I had 225k miles on it and was getting 190psi on all 4 cylinders. I was burning oil though.

A lot of junkyards around here won't sell 8th generation 1zzfe engines since they know that they have a bad reputation for oil-burning and they don't want the hassle of dealing with an angry customer! I've heard that 9th gen engines will fit, but, there is an awful lot of work that needs to be done to order to make it work.

i know a local yard with an 02 that might be willing to deal...

708 335 3000, ask for Robert and tell him you heard he has a blue 02 corolla with a good engine and you want to know if he'll sell it. theres a runnablility problem thats electronic going on with the car and he just wants it gone...but his dad thinks they can sell the whole car for $$$. damned thing smells like a beach at low tide and is worn out inside, outside is beatup as well.

south side of chicago, you'd need to arrange shipping.

Around here (salem oregon) I can get a used o1 for 750, without knowing the milage.

I can get one with knowing the milage for 900. With the engine reputation, I think I'm going to

sale if for what I can get as a mechanics special. The car is clean and straight and when it

was running good I was getting 40-42 phg. But still I just can't see putting more money into it.

I tried the seafoam, 1-1/2 cans, it didn't make any difference. Even took out the plug and poured

1/3 of can right in and let it set over night. Oh well.

Thank you all for all the help and suggestions.

did you do it in the engine oil yea?

A mechanic friend was saying yesterday, adding a tablespoon or more of Marvel Mystery Oil into the spark plug hole of the cylinder that you want to fix and letting it sit overnight can cure a stuck ring (at least for a while). Seafoam might work too, but I don't have any experience with that stuff working on anything that I have tried.

Good luck,

Hugh

I had been putting it in both the engine oil and gas regualarly once I found out

what an oiloholic it was. Up until I lost the compression in the #3 cyclindar.

Well whats one more product be for I sale the beast. I'll give it a go tommarrow and let you know

if it worked or not.

Thanks for the info.

It would be cheaper to change the engine (if you can't improve compression) than to buy a new car.

You can also repair the old engine (or have someone do it for you).

If the rest of the car is good - keep the car, repair/replace the engine.

You won't get much (you can check on www.kbb.com) for a car with a bad engine.

If all else fails - put it on e-Bay and someone like me will buy it/fix it and sell it.

Hope this helps.
