I have an older topic on this vehicle, but the symptoms have changed.
Vehicle is a 1995 1.8L (7afe?) 4 speed auto with overdrive, 164k miles.
The vehicle starts and idles okay, but once on the road it will jerk violently at unpredictable intervals, 1-5 times in quick succession, then continue driving with no significant loss of power. Whether the engine is cold or hot does not seem to affect the issue. Turning overdrive off does not change anything. No CEL present. The problem seems to occur more frequently (but not always and not exclusively) at:
-Between 20-30 mph
-Above 55 mph
-On hills.
What I've done so far/ruled out:
-Tested the battery
-Cleaned battery cables
-Checked air filter
-Cleaned intake manifold a bit
-Spark plugs/wires/distributor+rotor replaced about 15k miles ago. Pulled plugs and they look okay, no discolorations/oil.
-Replaced fuel filter at driver's side firewall
-checked PCV valve, "rattle" present and passed the "blow test"
-Inspected vacuum hoses - no cracks found
-New ignition coil installed, fixed stalling/refusal to start, but hesitation still present.
-Ran a tank of gas with a bottle of injector cleaner through
-Did 2 drain/refills on the transmission, also replaced filter. Added a bottle of "Lucas Transmission Fix" at 2nd refill.
-Replaced fuel pump and sock
I'm starting to think this may be a transmission issue, is there anything I may have overlooked? Other possibilities are some sort of sensor or the evap system, none of which I understand very well :/.
