I have 2001 corolla LE with 56k miles on it. Manual says replace Differential oil at 60k. What are these differential oil & is this something i can replace it myself? How important is this oil for ? Thanks in advance.

There is a section in your owner's manual that has fluid specs and it shows it for whatever type of transaxle you have. You can learn how to replace it yourself or pay the money to a trusted mechanic (I recommend someone independent). I am wondering the same sort of thing myself. I drive a 2000 LE and it is an automatic transaxle. I guess it is 3 speed because it goes from D to 2 to L (aka 1).

From my owner's manual:

MANUAL TRANSAXLE

Oil Capacity, L (qt., Imp. qt)

1.9 (2.0, 1.7)

Oil type: Gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5

Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 75w-90

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE

Automatic transmission

Fluid Capacity (drain and refill), L (qt., Imp. qt.)

Four-speed type

Up to 3.1 (3.3, 2.7)

Three-speed type

2.5 (2.6, 2.2)

Fluid type:

Automatic transmission fluid D-II or DEXRON®III (DEXRON®II)

Differential (three-speed type only)

Fluid Capacity L (qt., Imp. qt.)

1.4 (1.5, 1.2)

Fluid type:

Automatic transmission fluid D-II or DEXRON®III (DEXRON®II)

My guess is that ATF will cover all my bases then since I drive an automatic, lol! default_laugh
