Exhaust Rattle

By 626paulb, December 10, 2007

Hi,

We have a 2000CE and a 2001 CorollaS. Both of them have an exhaust rattle (sheet metal sound) just as the throttle is pressed in low gear (acceleration). I have tried for months to find this noise using a stethoscope, under the car, above the car, by pushing and bending the exhaust heat shields, etc, etc.

Anybody have a suggestion?? PLEASE!!!!

Welcome to the forum. Have you at least determined if it is more under the hoop, under the car, toward the rear of the car - that you notice the rattle? As exhaust shielding runs in several sections and extends the length of the car.

Chances are - it is the lower exhaust donut is totally shot and rattling there. A pretty common occurance for this generation of Corolla - usually most noticable when you drive through a big puddle of water and the car's exhaust note changes pitch.

You could put the car up on a lift and try running it - then look for exhaust problem.

How many miles? Sounds like the exhaust shield on the cat. Does it go away and only resonate/rattle at lower RPMs?

One has 20000 mi. and one has 50000 mi.

It only rattles on initial acceleration for one -two seconds in first gear. It seems to be in the front, under the engine.

What is the "lower exhaust donut" and where is it? In front of the cat?

Thanks all
