My project car is ready to be assessed and I am looking at what people would consider it is worth.

It is a 1993 4 door sedan with the 1.6L 4a-FE engine and the A131L automatic transmission.

It is a 3-speed (no overdrive). The tranny has 129k miles on it.

The car has 174k on the speedometer. The tires are fairly new.

Both driveshafts were changed, the radiator and all the belts (except timing).

I checked it on KBB and it says about $2840.00.

I expect to get $3K for it.

I paid $700 and put $774 for another transaxle and $140 for drive shafts in it and a few hundred more for misc. parts.

I did all the work myself and saved any labor costs.

The only thing it really needs right now is the radio mount and new paint for the roof.

Bikeman982

Today I wanted to paint the roof, but realized I didn't have enough paint, so I taped off the car and just sprayed some clearcoat on it.

I hope it slows down the deterioration of the original clearcoat.

It still looks bad and I may end up painting it after all.

Is that a 67 Buick Riviera in your neighbor's driveway? With a 430 cid, 360 hp Wildcat powered stump-pullin' V8 under the hood?

Bikeman, sorry for the tangent, but I love old Buicks...

That's the car, except the engine is in the trunk and the lazy neighbor is letting the car sit and be neglected.

He has someone else building some super engine, but it has yet to materialize.

I think the car is holding down the driveway and would make a good flower garden if he planted some on it.

Talk about a waste of metal...

Bikeman982

He has a cover that he keeps over the Riviera. It lasts about a day, then the wind blows it off.

He comes by about once a week to put the cover back on.

He is not smart enough to tie it on with some rope or something.

I told him I would help him put the other engine in it, but he is a big procrastinator.

Maybe someday he will get his act together and work on the car??

Bikeman982

My project car has 100 miles on it and it has not improved.

The shifting is not right.

It stays in first gear until 35-40 MPH and in second until 65-70 MPH.

That means most of the time it is in high RPM and is also burning more gas.

There is no overdrive and highway miles don't reduce gas consumption.

I will have to keep working on it before I sell it.

Bikeman982

The shifting might have improved a little, but not by much.

It still does not shift into 2nd until 32-37 MPH and into 3rd at 60-65 MPH.

Maybe the transaxle is bad?

Will driving it more improve the shifting, or will it stay the same??

Bikeman982

The car has 200 miles on it now and still no appreciative improvement.

Other than the high shifting points, the car runs great and is in much better condition than when first purchased.

Bikeman982

I called two different local transmission places and the first one wanted $65 to diagnose it.

I took it to the second place who did it for free. Needless to say, they will get the repair job.

After phoning Cherry Auto Parts, they agreed it would be financially better to have it repaired than to have it sent back and find another.

They are sending a check to cover the estimated $312 repair from the second transmission shop.

It seems that the valve body is stuck and also the cable to the throttle is too short.

They test drove it for free and gave me a free estimate.

It is something I don't feel comfortable doing and since there was a 180 day guarantee from Cherry, they are covering it.

Thanks for the help, I'll keep you up to date.

More to follow.

P.S. The loud noise is also due to bad wheel bearings and I will do those myself. I may also need hubs.

That is another issue with the project car.

Bikeman982

Valve body was cleaned on transaxle. Shifting was corrected.

Hub and bearings changed on both front wheels.

Loud noise is gone. Car is ready for sale.

Bikeman982

The car is expected to be sold tomorrow.

It has been running great and no problems with the transaxle or hub and bearings.

Radio is back to stock and sounds fine.

I will let you know how the sale goes.

Bikeman982

Car was sold today for $3000 and the new owners have gone to the DMV to get it registered in their name.

One less car in my driveway, although the car was a good one to drive.

I am working on my neighbors 1997 and when that is done, I have a 1995 to fix.

More to follow.
