Summer Gas Mileage Thread

So on my last 8 gallons of fuel i went 275 miles, 34.4 MPG was my exact figure. pretty good for city/highway driving? most of my driving has the engine between 1500 and 2500 rpm with TCC applied in 4th gear, between 35 and 60mph. i dont actually get on a highway, its a local road which is called a highway and has some stops but the speed limit never goes below 40mph, i'm able to keep the TCC on and in 4th gear keep my rpm between 1500 and 2100, trying not to go past 3500rpm from a stop.

My 98 still gets well over 30mpg..Im in an area where the just switched over to the summer mix fuel. Gas prices here are over 3.00+ gal wtf?!

I got 420 miles on 11.2 gallons which is 37.5 mpg here in Massachusetts 80% highway with speed from 65-75mph.

I have 04 LE auto with 65000 miles.

Oh man, not another fuel economy thread. They never end, and people who post good gas mileage get a BS flag called by people who don't get good gas mileage.

I got 360 miles on a 10 gallons. This is city and highway driving. It is 1993 Corolla with a 1.6 liter engine and a 3 speed automatic transmision. The odometer reading is 223,000 miles and still going with no oil leak or burn oil. Use Amsoil 10W30 100% synsthetic.

actually mileages listed so far seem reasonable and realistic according to what i've seen in the past and on other forums.

Bikeman982

Ok - more mileage figures and gas prices.

Here's mine 29 MPG and $3.25 a gallon.

^^ The gas prices are cheap over there Bikeman.. Over here in L.A., it's around the average of $3.40/gallon..

I wanna move up north now default_biggrin ... oh ya, mine is around 30 mpg..

A few people who made short trips in stop and go traffic called BS on people who reported good gas mileage.

A few people reported over 40MPG. It is possible, but not with normal driving keeping up with traffic. I once drive 55-60MPH on the HWY and feathered the gas as much as I could and got 43MPG. It can be done, but I got passed by everyone, and it probably wasn't the safest thing to do because it's better to drive with traffic.

Driving habits, the time of year all play a roll. I don't really have a chance to test HWY fuel economy often, but city driving has been as less as 29 and as much as 34. I don't figure it out enough to see what the average is.

I saw on the news the other day that the EPA are going to FINALLY update the test that they do. I think it's in 08-09. The story basically said you can expect to see about a 15% drop in fuel economy on the window stickers for cars. It will of coarse very with between cars. I think the Honda's and Toyota's Civic, and Rolla are not too outrages in the fuel economy claims. It takes a clear road, no hard wind, and a egg shell between your foot and the gas pedal, but it can be done. The story was basically bashing the Prius because the owners just can't seem to get close to the EPA fuel economy claims.

i've actually managed to come close to the EPA numbers in stop and go and on the highway, but i agree that the seasons, driving style, type of driving, and how well the car is kept make HUGE differences. i've seen mileage in the high teens with my car in the winter when i had a bad thermostat, was making short trips, and the engine wouldnt heat up all the way. on the flip side, ive seen 38mpg (3 better than epa numbers) on the highway drafting behind semi's for 3-4 hours going 60-65mph.

The last time I filled up was on 05/06/07. I drove 358.0 miles using 10.712 gallons for an average of 33.4 miles per gallon. Over the last 2 years, 10 months and 16 days I've averaged 31.5 MPG. I drove 14,569.7 miles since 06/21/04 and used 463.083 gallons while paying an average price of $2.509 per gallon with a standard deviation of $0.36. Over the last 2 years, 10 months and 16 days I've also paid $1,162.27 for gas.

Guess I'll bite and be the first one with a 40+ mpg post. Filled up this week and hit 40.4 mpg. Best I've ever recorded is 41. Normal for me is 38 summer and 35 winter.

I have a 98 with 5 speed manual. My driving is 90% highway with the cruise set at 70mph. I fill up at a local gas station which does not add the 10% ethanol blend most people around here do.

Call it BS if you want, but it's not the first time I hit the 40mpg mark.

I bought an 06 CE last July which got 34 mpg. That got wrecked and my replacement is an 07 LE which I'm lucky if I get 30 out of it. Comparably equipped and my driving habits were just as bad in both of them, so I can understand why there is such a broad spectrum of answers here.

Filled up this morning at $2.899/gal.

Since I started keeping track of mileage (1/30/2007), I've put a total of 8862.9 miles on 251.98 gallons, for an average of 35.17mpg. The 251.98 gallons cost $608.52, or an average of $2.415/gallon. Average cost per mile is $0.069.

The lowest was 31.32mpg, and the highest was 38.10mpg.

I'd say that's about 85% highway mileage. I'm not especially gentle with my driving either.

The lowest and highest price per gallon were $1.979 feb 2, 2007, and $2.899 current price.

My mileage falls smack inside the range the EPA lists. I have a 98 5spd, no cruise. I suspect I'd do a lot better with cruise, and with somewhat less of the "fun" driving.

I usually fill up at the same exxon station. I don't know what the fuel blend is though. I get the 87 octane, and fill the tank till the pump clicks off.

I can understand how someone could hit 40+mpg with the right circumstances.

Right now my average commuting to work is 29 or so. That is 21 miles round trip, all stop and go traffic with 60 mph sprints in between the lights. I haven't filled up this tank yet, but it looks like i'll get around 33mpg, 60% highway, with a mountain bike on the trunk. Best I did last summer was 40mpg, all highway at 68mph from Rochester, NY to Boston... made the 400 mile trip on one tank. I don't think they've switched over to summer fuel yet here in Massachusetts, as right now the temps are about 40 or so...

Well... I finally broke 40mpg. And I wasn't even trying.

Yesterday morning I filled up at the Exxon station in Westover, MD at $2.999/gallon. This morning I filled up at Grant's Exxon station in Salisbury, MD at $2.879/gallon, 130.1 miles, 3.125 gallons, or 41.63mpg. I was pleased when I saw that. That was for one day of normal commute, with A/C running, normal commute driving pattern (ie, not gentle, but not drag racing either).

I drove to Prince Frederick, MD and back to Salisbury, and stopped at Easton Energy Exxon station in Easton, MD and filled back up at $2.769/gallon, 196.8 miles, 5.159 gallons, or 38.15mpg. That included some urban driving in the Annapolis, MD area. Quite a bit of rolling hills traffic and stop and go traffic.

I do love my 'rolla. default_laugh

i'll be filling up tomorrow afternoon, i'm at 1/2 indicated tank and i've gone just over 250 miles...not sure how many gallons i'll need to put in but my mileage should be around 34 again, maybe a little more or maybe a little less.

I've had my '07 S (manual transmission) for a week and just filled up for the first time. It took 12.8 gallons after going for 448 miles after rolling off the dealer's lot. My math says that's 35 mpg. Prices in my part of Missouri are $2.98/gallon.

I expect that number to improve a little as the car breaks in. If I average over 36 total than I'll be all smiles. The Saturn Ion I traded off averaged 32 in combined driving (2.2 litre, manual transmission).

I usually get within 15% or so of the EPA's high mark. I drive 50 miles a day round-trip to work on a state highway (55 miles per hour) and about 2 miles of town driving on the ends. I think that's as perfect as it can get. I know my mileage goes down when I go across country and cruise for a full tank at 70 mph.

32.5 on my last tank, however i didnt fill up at my usual station and usual pump. this one seemed to put in more than the usual one does. still not bad mileage considering how i drive!

I've hit the magic 250 000 km on my 01 S now and the mileage is starting to drop a bit... mind you, not too much and probably associated more with my new driving habits (I live in the town I work now and don't do the 60 mile commute into work anymore).

Best mileage (mostly hwy) = 6.2 L/ 100 km or ~ 38 mpg

Worst mileage (combined) = 6.8 L/ 100 km or ~ 34.6 mpg

The best mileage I got from the car was when I commuted 120 miles/ day on a flat stretch of hwy to work. 5.5 L/ 100 km or almost 43 mpg!!! The car had 120 000 - 160 000 km on it then.

I'm noticing that the engine eats more Mobil 1 than normal these days but it could be due to more stop and go driving. I'm entertaining the idea of running a seal conditioner in my next sump to see if it might be slightly leaky valve seals.

run a compression test across all 4 cylinders and see if theyre even all the way across, they should all be pretty close. my GF's escort was drinking a little oil, a little more than valve seals, one cylinder had sticking rings. we ran some seafoam through the oil for 15 minutes and then changed and it restored the compression in that cylinder.

Driving a 1999 Corolla VE, 87K miles.

Got the first mileage figures (bought the car about a month back): 27.34mpg default_huh

(pretty low considering what everybody else is getting)

but mostly city driving on El Camino.

Exorbitant gas prices at 3.33

no thats about right for city only driving, i usually get 24-26 doing city only and driving pretty tame.

A lot of posters confuse true city driving with suburban and commute miles. Those are mixed miles.

True city drivng, especially if its short distances in cold weather, with time between stops to allow the engine to cool, wrecks havoc on mileage.

I am pretty compulsive about mileage.

Overall average with a 17.3 mile suburb to city commute with about 10 lights and also many miles of cruise at 70 is about 30-31 in the winter and about 33 in the summer.

Highway at 75-80 on interstate with hills, about 34.

Highway, 2 lane, also with hills (but I kick off the cruise before it downshifts), diving 65-70 and trying hard for good mileage (but not crazy, like drafting semis) I got 37 twice. That was on a pure test tank with nothing but highway miles.

I personally thing the rollas don't like speeds much over about 65. 70 is OK, 75 and up is murder in terms of mileage. My opinion...

Worst ever was dead of winter, 29.

2006 LE with automatic.....
