Circuit City Morons

By Brendon, March 7, 2007

Today at about 11:00 in the afternoon, I went to Circuit City to buy "The Departed" on DVD. I've never seen the movie, but all my friends have been telling me to. Besides, it takes place here in Massachusetts so I got to watch it!

Anyways, I get to the checkout line and the moron cashier asks me for my drivers' license. I asked him why and he told me "Because this movie's rated R and I got to make sure you're not 16 or under". At that point I was about to punch him in the face, but instead I calmed myself down and gave it to him. He started at it for about a minute, held it up to the light, then gave it back to me as though it were fake. With my beard, I actually look somewhat Middle Eastern (my mother is Persian). I was considered asking the guy if he would also like to strip search me just in case I'm carrying a bomb. Here are the 6 main reasons I'm so pissed off:

1) I'm 21 years old.

2) In the last week, I've grow out my beard because I like the way I look better with it. (can a 16 year old even grow a mustache???)

3) This was 11:00am on a Wednesday (right in the middle of school)

4) It was about 10 degrees outside so how could I ever possibly get to this store without a car? (in Mass, you have to be at least 17 to get a license). This Circuit City is located miles away from any residential neighborhood on a state highway.

5) I had my credit card already out and visible for him to see. You have to be at least 18 to have a credit card the last time I checked.

6) There was a woman in front of me who was probably only in her late twenties buying a whole assortment of movies and he didn't ask for her license.

Basically, this moron's logic is that I'm a 16 year old kid with a full grown beard who has just skipped school to ride his bicycle in the 10 degree weather to use a stole credit card and license to buy The Departed. Is there something wrong with this picture?? It feels like I've been unfairly profiled. I'm thinking about returning the movie and buying it somewhere else because of the way I've been treated.

You're right, the logic the CC employee was using was stupid, but what kind of people generally work at places like CC? Just because you can come up with 10 reasons that your are obviously older than 17 doesn't mean that they can come up with even 1. I had the same issue when I was younger. Those are the issues you'll run into time and time again when dealing with people less intelligent than yourself.

BTW, I could grow a full mustache and most of a beard at 16. I look 18 when I shave, especially when I'm just in jeans and a T-shirt. If I dress up a little or don't shave for a day, people assume I'm well into my 20s. I've never been carded to buy anything when I haven't shaved sometime in the 24 hours previous, regardless of what I'm wearing. Works out quite nicely.

Assuming that the guy had no racial intentions when asking you for id...............

I worked as a bartender for over 10 years and (for my own neck) I had to ask for Id. Even when id's where faked, my boss would overrule it as it took the onus off the bar. The one thing I would always tell someone when asking for "id" was..."The time you should be upset should be when people STOP asking you for "id"! I never...ever had a complaint from anyone after telling them that.

Bikeman982

I always had a "baby face" and got carded almost everywhere until I was about 30.

It always seemed funny to me that I was well past the restricted age, yet still being "carded".

Are you sure you are not a 16 year old kid with a full grown beard who has just skipped school to ride his bicycle in the 10 degree weather to use a stolen credit card and license to buy The Departed?

The movie is pretty good.

I agree that Circuit Ciy sucks but you're whining a bit much. I still get carded at almost every bar i go to even though I haven't been 21 in almost 10 years. Just the way things are.

I don't have a problem with carding people, especially when it comes to things like alcohol or cigarettes. I guess I didn't really establish the ambience enough. I don't know what his problem was (or if he doesn't like middle eastern looking people), but he specifically targeted me. He didn't harass the woman in front of me even though she was maybe just 4-6 years older, but when I came up and handed him the movie to scan, he gave me this really pervasive look. Then he scanned the item, starred at his screen for a good 15 seconds (probably looking to see the rating of the movie), then acting as though he were a police officer or someone of any real importance, said "I need to see your license or identification, sir" in a firm and demanding tone. After I handed it to him, he starred at it for a good minute, held it up to the light, reading every single word on it before handing it back to me.

Not only was this absolutely rude, it was very embarassing to me having 4 people behind me in line starring at me like I were some pety little punk who needed to be escorted to the principal's office by a truant officer. I'm willing to bet he didn't give one other customer behind me as hard a time as he gave me. He might as well have slapped a sticker on my forehead that says "Deliquent". Does this clarify my position a little bit more?

I get that you were offended by the way you were treated. You have the right to your feelings. Maybe something about you triggered a bad vibe for him and he had to be absolutely certain that he was dealing with an honorable customer. If it was me - I would never give him any more of my business.

Brendan you should go back and read this post and many of your other posts. You need to chill and yes you are doing a fair amount of whining. Enough of the pity party. This is the world we live in today.

So, the guy is a moron and you're going to punch him in the nose......good move by you NOT. And by the way, I have seen some serious butt kicking done through the years by the most unsuspecting people so be careful who you approach in a less than friendly manner.

You look somewhat Middle Eastern....so you could also look Italian or Greek right or even Eastern Indian? Big deal. You live in Massachusetts and people tend to be rude. I wouldn't live here if I weren't so firmly entrenched by family and obligatory employment. I'm sure they aren't paying this guy much or sending him to Customer Service Nice Guy training. Grow some seeds and ask to see the manager. Then discuss your perception of the clerk's behavior in an adult manner.

1.) Act it.

2.) I knew 12-13 year olds that shaved. I thought they were cool. default_biggrin

3.) Kids do skip school on occasion.

4.) Human beings can't walk in 10 degree weather? Could a young person's mother/father/sister/brother/aunt/uncle/cousin/neighbor/friend have driven them to the store and were waiting for them in the parking lot?

5) You could have had your parents card with a note from them also.

6) You say she looked to be in her late twenties so obviously she looked her age right??

You've made many assumptions here that the clerk obviously didn't have time to sort through.

Grow up and get on with your life or you'll have trouble coping with a lot of the people you meet during the journey.

That is all,

movie sales aren't like bars. there's no law forcing then to restrict movie sales to minors.

Carding for a rated R movie during that time just seems ridiculous; holding the ID up in the light is even more ridiculous.

I can see the news story now: "Terrorist Claims Victory Over American Corporation By Purchasing Rated R Movie With Fake ID"

In your situation I probably would have just left or returned the DVD at a later date. (With the second option, you have the pleasure of knowing that Circuit City has lost money -- even if it's just credit card fees and their employees' time.)

I once had my ID checked under the guise of checking my credit card (which merchants cannot require as a condition for completing a transaction with visa or mastercard as payment)... for a $4.50 rated R movie ticket purchase. Right.

Bikeman982

Brendon, we understand you were offended. Did you end up getting the movie you wanted to rent?

You have to forget about it and just chalk it up to an inconsiderate sales clerk.

Now it is time to move on to better things.

I ended up returning the movie, then buying it at a supermarket (it had a self checkout just in case default_wink )

You returned it - was that after you did the checkout?

My suggestion for the store would be to not go there when that same clerk is working.

You might get tempted to do some violent action against him.
