01 Head Unit Problem

by dreadon, December 15, 2006

ok so i have an 01 corolla and i am putting in a audio system i didnt want to mess with an amp so i came across this panasonic headunit but aperently there is no way to mount this one in my car becuase it uses the stupid design like the american cars with the dumb tabs i really want this head unit becuase it has a lot of power from the get go but crutchfield says it wont fit and i look at the manual and it also looks like it wont work my car can take every other stupid unit out ther except these and taht makes me mad. does anyone know if i can mount this unit in i believe it is like a sleeve unit instead of just mounting it to the side of the space. if anyone knows if it can be done then i would love that info i dont care even if i have to mod something to get it to work. i want this headunit. does anyone have pictures of what the dash looks like so i dont have to take mine apart to find out?

thanks for the help if u know anything please tell me or my email is darkgamer1912@gmail.com

It is best to get a head unit that will fit in your car without too much work. Any head unit can be made to fit, but you may have to do some extensive dash modification and it may not be worth the time and effort. You should try to locate one that will fit your car that has the qualities of the head unit that you like.

Hope that helps.

It would be helpful to know the model of the Panasonic headunit you are trying to put in, some here might be able to shed some light on the matter.

If the headunit itself will not physically fit in the spot - then you have some problems. There - you have to ask yourself if you really like the headunit enough to chop up the dash, in order to get it in. If it does fit in the space - then it is a matter of finding some way to secure it in there.

As fish said,

Which Pana radio?

If you shop around, I am sure that you can find a h/u just as good or better. (I have a Pana radio in my wife's car... nothing special...)

If you cant find one right now, wait a month or 2, most manufacturers will come out with new units ever 4-6mo.

Dont stress so much. Its only a radio.

good luck

tdk.

i thank you all for the help sorry i forgot to say what it was. im looking into the Panasonic CQ-C8803U the only reason i want it is beacuse it is powerful and i dont want to mess with amps in my car it puts out 70x4watts per channel and 31rms so i figure its got power on its own but according to crutchfield the mounting will not fit the brackets i have the first couple are of the unit sides the 2nd group is of my what i have in my car and the brackets

thanks for all the help if someone could tell me some info and the one who put one in their car did u have trouble?

Well - size-wise, I'm pretty sure the Panasonic headunit you described will physically fit in the opening - if anything, it might be a hair smaller than the OEM unit. The bolt pattern on the side would probably be the problem. Looks a little different than what is on my JVC aftermarket and Toyota OEM units - but not really by much. Chances are - you will not need to use the sleeve - that will complicate things. But you may have to modify the OEM brackets to mount it correctly to your headunit. That would be drilling out the holes slightly, grinding down the pins, etc.

But you may have to modify the OEM brackets to mount it correctly to your headunit. That would be drilling out the holes slightly, grinding down the pins, etc.

That happened when I tried to install my JVC deck in "mah rolla": The OEM bracket has aligning pins that mate with holes that are not present on the JVC; ended up having to drill one of them out. Of course I had to forego the trim ring as well - on both Corolla and Camry.

has anyone else put this ran into this problem i dont think the sleeve thing will work and i dont want to mess with that junk i y do they change the holes on this unit over the rest that is stupid but you guys think it will work if i drill new holes and is it worth it. if i take it to like circuit city and have them look and see if the braket will work is that worth doing. i know they have a open panasonic unit there and maybe we can check it out to see what i have to do. but again is it worth it to do? sorry i run my sentences together

I had an older JVC and Kenwood unit that came with sleeves to install - I just tossed the sleeves, too much work to mess with. They drill/tap the holes for different cars/brackets because they can. Doesn't mean a manufacturer has to make every unit they sell fit every car out on the market.

It is your call if it worth it or not - sounds like you already have the unit you want and do not want to dump more money buying another one to replace it. If it was me - always worth a shot to modify the existing bracket to fit the unit, once you determine that the headunit will physically fit well and you know that the unit works (I found out the hard way many years ago). That's the trick - modify the bracket or make your own or sometimes its a matter of different bolts - don't drill any new holes in the headunit. You might accidentally drill into a needed heatsink or drill through something, then headunit = paperweight. All bolt sizes are listed on the side of the head unit (marked as M5x8 or similar).

You can try to take it to Circuit City - but I believe they will try to sell you a different unit there, the intall guys don't like to do too much work there, just plug and go.

If the stereo fits, measure the mounting bolt pattern and see if you can modify your cars bracket.
