Battery Testing

By tashirosgt, October 19, 2006

As far as a "good" or "bad" battery, do the battery testers used by auto parts stores measure anything that you can't see merely by using a battery charger and seeing if the battery is taking a charge?

Those specific gravity testers report essentially the same thing as a good battery charger (one that indicates amount of current pulled in to charge the battery).

Actually, the Specific Gravity of the electrolyte in a cell follows a linear relationship with time when discharging. It is nonlinear while charging. So it may not shed light in certain circumstances, only shows if the battery is good or not. Factor in that many batteries use a gel type electrolyte that cannot be read accurately - makes less sense to get those battery testers now - I'd just stick with my battery charger.
