Spam Crap

By muzak, August 23, 2006

I would like to know if members have the ability to shut this guy up now. He's online at the same time as me and I would love to be able to knock on his front door with a baseball bat and introduce myself. There should be a way on here to disable any posts that contain words as this idiot is using.

He can't post anymore. This 'feature' gets activated when anyone posts blatant spam.

What's his name??

I don't remember his name. Some Russian alias, but they did a good quick job here and got rid of him. Well done.

Well done for the spam eradicators!!

Like a monkee and a sledgehammer.... default_tongue

Does it key in on names, special words, IP addressess, or just whatever makes spam different?

It keys in when I, the monkee, clicks the 'disable posts indefinitley' checkbox on the profile and press the 'Save changes' button... default_laugh

It would be nice for the bulletin board software to filter posts with keyphrases like 'dating', 'viagra', etc

to require approval..oh well..I guess we'll see if any crawlers will find the 2 keywords above now. If some more spam comes in from those keywords...yipes..we're under attack default_ohmy Might have to ask Dave to do some IP filtering.

So it is a "manual" spam filter.

What about when I did the "report" button on the bottom of the spam??

When you press that button Nillinois and myself get a message. We then look at the post, decide what to do with it and how to deal with whoever posted it. You guys can't do anything about the SPAM other than report it to us. But please continue doing so, it helps us a lot.

Nillinois, Dave, Jim and myself are the only ones with the ability to delete other member's posts, ban them and disable their posting ability. Dave and Jim are the only ones who can ban an IP address.

I think we need to do something more vigorous. I've just required administrator approval of new members, which is drastic, but I'll try to reserach something better. It's weird, there's a LOT of spam. I wonder why.

I've got that song "Spam" by Monty Python if anyone wants to hear it.

There's a spam song? All I know about Monty Python plus spam is that skit where they go through a menu and some guys chant "spam" all the way. default_smile

I always thought that because of the distribution method spam was easily detectable and therefore filterable. I have several e-mail accounts that can do that for me. Some of it gets deleted before I ever see it and some goes into a "Bulk" folder that eventually gets deleted. Is there a way to come up with a filter for the forum??

The best antispam system is unquestionably akismet but I don't think there's a IPB plugin yet.

Found a BUNCH of people trying to sign up to spam. Added gawab.com and anything.ru to banned e-mail addresses... sorry about any real Russians trying to sign up.

is there a way for legit people to contact you to register if their email is blocked?

Legitimate people should not have their e-mail blocked. It is only the spammers we don't want.

If they're from gawab or mail.ru they can use the feedback form or something to reach me.

Shutting off those domains seems to have worked. I'm temporarily shutting off admin overview of each new registration.

That is good news - the SPAM problem is getting a little obnoxious. I've noticed it starting to hit other forums and other public BBS as well.

Spammers use programs to circumvent the anti-spam programs, until new ones come out, then they learn how to get around them It is a viscous cycle.

Ah, the arms race that goes on forever.

I've also been banning IP groups as they come up.
