My Favorite Improvised Tool

By tashirosgt, July 14, 2006

My favorite improvised tool is a thin metal tube that was meant to go around the steel shaft of a weight set to serve as a grip. I flattened on end of it to an oblong shape so the end of a open end wrench will go in it. The handle of breaker bar will go into the other. It's light but strong enough to use as an extension when you need extra leverage but not a crazy amount. This is much more convenient that trying to carry a metal pipe with you as you crawl under a car.

I have a small piece of aluminum pipe that I can use for more leverage with a breaker bar. It fits over my wratchet handle as well.

i have a 6ft steel pipe default_smile 1" ID

then i have some smaller pipes, a 5 foot, a 1.5 foot, and 2 3 foot sections that slip together.

My long breaker bar, which is probably 12" long, hasn't failed me yet. I usually need it to loosen the nut holding on my lawn mower blade. I've never had to use anything other than a standard ratchet handle on anything for my cars or bike.

I now have a Craftsman breaker bar (1/2 drive) that will get the tight ones.
