List The Cars You Have Owned

by gremlin, July 15, 2005

See every reply in these pages:

1989:

1975 American Motors Pacer - 1st car, what a beast had it for four years and paid $50 from an unrepeatable used car lot in Seattle. Traded in for my 1993 Corolla

1993:

1993 Toyota Corolla - 1st new car, the car that just won't quit. Today its my daily driver, when the new Corolla comes in it will be my daily beater.

1998:

1998: Saturn SW-2 After eight years in the Military, I thought a new car would be nice; it was until the engine blew up twice in a two moth period. The Saturn was sold back to GM under Washington's lemon law

1998: Toyota Corolla I still wanted a new car, so a new Corolla was in order. Two weeks into trouble free ownership the new Corolla was stolen and totaled in a Police case. This took some explanation, I was a rookie Seattle cop and I was the second officer chasing my own car!

2003:

2003 Dodge Caravan, I do not have a family, but I got my own business and the Corolla did fit my needs. This Dodge was a disaster (more of a dealership problem) this time I used Oregon's lemon law to get this heap

2003 Ford Windstar: Work van just got done a lot of work for a local Ford dealership, nice work van and good people to do business. Sold along with the business in May of this year

2005:

2005/06 Toyota Corolla (Ordered) this one just good for at least two Million miles. Hehe

OK Grem, I'll byte:

1970: 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 "LTD" 2-dr. Coupe, 351 cu. in. 4-bbl. V-8, Automatic, white with blue interior. Purchased 5 yrs. old with 27,000 miles for $1,095.00 in Sept, '70, driven for 3 years to 90,000 miles, traded for fifty bucks for:

1973: 1972 Dodge (Mitsubishi) Colt, 2-dr. coupe, 4-speed, 1600 cc. engine, orange. Purchased used for $1,600 with 16,000 miles; driven to approximately 90,000 miles, sold for $950 just before entering the Air Force.

1978: New 1978 Plymouth Horizon, 1700 cc. 4-speed manual, purchased for $4,300, driven to approx. 50,000 miles in 5 years; sold for $2,500 before I was transerred from Andrews AFB, MD to Rhein-Main AB, Germany.

1983: 1980 BMW 325i, 2.3 liter 4 cyl, 4-speed, purchased 3 yrs. old for DM 7,500 with around 60,000 KM, don't remember my mileage (kilometerage?) figures, owned for 2 years and sold for DM 5,200. Piece of KrautSchiesse.

1985: 1983 Chevrolet Caprice, fully loaded, 305 cu. in. V-8, Turbo Hydramatic, purchased 2 yrs. old with 28,000 miles for $9,800, sold less than 2 years later with approximately 60,000 miles for $6,000. I transferred back to Rhein -Main AB, Germany and purchased a new:

1987: 1987 Opel Reckord L, 4-cyl, don't remember displacement, 4-speed, 4-door sedan. Another orange car. Great ride; drove it just under 40,000 KM. Purchsed new for DM 17,000 and sold before transferring to England for US $9,600.

TO BE CONTINUED...

1981:

1976 Datsun (don't remember model number) it had a 1900cc engine and was pretty fast. totalled it--twice

1982:

1973 fiat 850 spider (903ccs) Tiny and fun---when it ran. lots of stories i can't tell about that car. Did things in it you never thought you could do in a car that small. Sold it for college tuition.

1986:

1962 plymouth valiant with a push button tranny. Very cool. Had it totally decked out with all sorts of weird artsy things like a dinosour diarama in the back window

1992:

1989 honda civic. Drove that car hard and cculdn't kill it. Used to hit 100mph oon a daily basis (i was young and stupuid). Finally got totalled when a hit and run driver fleeing a robbery creamed me. they never caught the guy.

1999:

Subaru outback sport. No interesting stories to tell aboout it.

2001:

1996 subaru legacy, which i took over from my wife. Totalled it hitting a dear--a 9 point buck at 70mph

2003:

2001 honda odyssey. Family grocery-getter.

2004:

2005 corolla. Now I'm practical in my old age, i guess.

oh yeah-- i forget. Owned a pristine 1963 porsche 356 between 2001 and 2003. bought it just before i got married, then started making babies and couldn't afford it anymore.

Also have had lots of interesting vintage motorcycles and scooters. just ebaying my last one. a 64 vespa. ebay number #4561989382

1961 Pontiac Tempest - Weird car - half of a Pontiac V8 - tranny under trunk

1964 Vette Sting Ray Coupe - Lots of fun

1966 Plymouth Belvedere I - ex CHP interceptor - Ate Vettes for dinner

1964 Mustang Coupe - nice six banger

1984 Chevette - bought new - total POS

1987 Chevy Nova (Corolla Clone) - proof positive GM can screw up anything they

touch

1992 Sentra - OK but 2 doors

1994 Mazda Protege - Good - Expensive Parts

1996 Saturn SL - Decent but I sold it in a year

1997 Saturn SL - OK

1999 Saturn SL - OK

2000 Saturn LS - Made me a Corolla owner (Utter dog waste)

2003 Corolla CE - A keeper for sure

Continuing my list:

1991:

1991 Ford Tempo 4WD 4-dr. sedan, 4-cylinder 2.3 liters, automatic trans. Very weird car, owned it for the first 7 months stationed at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Used the four-wheel drive feature in snow exactly once, the rest of the time I had to carry all that extra weight around in a car with a 100 HP motor, and the damn thing could barely get out of it's way. I racked up a lot of miles on it since I was dating a girl who lived 70 miles away in Golden, CO, she went to the Colorado School of Mines right next door to the Coors plant! I liked the car, but was getting sick of every Taurus I saw cleaning my clock when the light turned green, so I traded it after 7 months and 20,000 miles for:

1991:

A 1991 Ford Taurus CL, 3.8 liter V-6, auto trans, loaded. Very nice car when something wasn't breaking on it. Owned it for 9 years and 134,000 miles, traded it for $500 on a:

2000:

2001 Toyota Corolla LE, 1.8 liter, 5-speed stick, loaded. Great car, loved it to death, but the clutch was so stiff it was miserable to drive in all the city driving I do. So I traded it for my present ride:

2002:

2003 Toyota Corolla LE, Automatic, Lunar Mist Metallic. It came with standard issue steel wheels and plastic covers, I bought the OEM 6-spoke alloy wheels for it from eBay; they were take-offs from an '03 Corolla S whose owner bought bigger aftermarket wheels.

I'm game... In chronological order...

89 Tempo - Drove it into the ground communiting an hour to college everyday for 2 years. Eventually blew the transmission. It was an automatic and I'd have to pop it into neutral at stop lights or it would stall.

94 Corolla - No major problems in 2 years except a bent front axle. I loved this car. Sadly, I had to sell it when I got stationed in Germany and bought...

91 BMW 535i - ... this piece of snip. I hate this car with every ounce of my soul squared. I've had problems with the coolent system over the past 2 years. Everything except the radiator I've had replaced. The radiator was replaced 6 months before I bought it. Recently, I started getting oil going into the coolent so I had the head gasket replaced and the head checked. That was 3 months ago. Now, I've rediscovered that familier cottage cheese in my coolent and took it back to the shop and after paying to get the head checked 3 months ago they're like "Hmmm, I think the head is cracked." Piss. It's sitting there right now and may soon have to become my new secondary car (read below). ADAC (Germanys version of AAA) has had to give me a tow 4 times. The biggest kicker about it and is actually quite morbid, is the guy I bought it from got busted for child molestation eariler this year. I was reading Stars and Stripes and recognized his name and sure enough, after checking the bill of sale, same guy. Sooooo... my theory is Satan still thinks ol' perv owns the car and is giving me the asspain for it.

91 Suzuki Alto - My POS, beater, point a to b, get me to work and home vehicle I found for $500. This thing was awesome. I could run on a full tank of gas for two weeks and it only took $13 to fill it up. Sadly, it just failed inspection and is going to cost more to fix it then it's worth. So, it's off to the junkyard. I'm not too bummed though. "The Turtle" has been good to me over the past year.

05 Corolla S - After having the run around with the bimmer for 2 years, I've had enough. I needed a new car with a warrenty to replace it. The old 94 rolla had been the most dependable car to date and I absolutly love the style of the new models. I've had it for almost a month and have never been so happy. Sometimes I just go out in the driveway and sit in it. I don't go anywhere or do anything. I'm just cherishing having a car I don't have to drop 800-1000 Euro on every couple months.

Sorry for the long winded post.

Dai_Shan

1989 Plymoth Voyager Minivan....$500 from my parents around 2000 , first car... served me with ~1 major repair a year (fuel pump, timing belt, 1 fail ball joint) until 2004.

2001 Saturn SC1(3door coupe) bought from my parents also...~9000$ (tookup their loan payments 260$) in 2003 i think. Has like 57000 mi and runs great. (although not as peppy as the rolla)

2005 (july 04) bought my first NEW car....2005 Corolla S. Love it so far default_smile Very glad i went with a rolla, over a Jetta or Mazda3.

Wow, here goes my incredible list:

2000: 1990 Buick Century. Wow, this thing was a tank. It had a lot of problems but thats probably because I went a year without changing the oil, lol. I was 16 and no one ever told me you actually had to perform maintance on cars! I slammed this thing into a curb at like 35 mph and snapped the control arm but besides that, it was basically it. It was pretty tough but a pain in the ###### always. For the entire time I owned it an before and after, it had a mysterious idling problem that no one could ever fix!.

2002: 1987 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II. This was the first car I every actually bought, the first was provided to me by my parents. This was a pretty cool car, and I still have it for now, not for long though. It also has a strange idling problem but I"m getting a TPS in a few days that I hope will fix it. This car was descently fast but better than that, it handled like a dream. I really wish I could afford to keep it because if you have money, these cars are awsome! They can be a drag car or an auto X car relatively easy. Perfect 50/50 weight distribution is awsome. Unfortunately, the rotary engine can be problematic at times and very expensive when it is. Not to mention, nobody here knows how to fix them! I loved this car but I needed something more reliable to get me through grad school (if I get in). So I bought a....

2005: 2005 Toyota Corolla CE. I'm still waiting on its arrival but is should be here "within 4 days." But I'm going to try to get them to hold it till August in hopes that the rebates will come back! God I hope it never develops an idling problem because I'm really tired of searching for vacuum leaks!

My list is super short as well

1996: 1987 Mazda 323, hand me down from my parents. Didn't allow full access to it until 98 when I turned 18 and left for college. Rally the heck out of it on the rural gravel roads.

2001: 2002 Corolla S, sold off the 323 (coined the nickname blue lightning) and bought the new corolla after finishing college.

2005: 2005 Toyota Corolla CE............snip

LOL, wow. Near the end it pretty much mimics how I ended up with my 2003 Corolla.

I had a 1986 RX-7 non-turbo. After about 3 years of driving it year round, I decided that I had enough of expensive parts and really bad fuel economy and ended up buying a brand new 2003 Corolla. Since the RX-7 saw winter, it had rust and plagued with a lot of issues, so I stopped driving it.

Since I had a parts RX-7 car, I thought what the heck, I'll buy another one. I am sucker for pushiment I guess. Bought myself a 1987 RX-7 TurboII. Boy I thought my non-turbo was quick, but it has nothing on this car. It's scary fast. But I know all too well about the upkeep to keep them running well....which includes vacuum leaks. This car seems to have come standard with a ton of vaccum lines. Fun fun. But it's a total blast to drive.

Here's my list all manuals;

1980; 1980 Mustang Ghia, white with old Falcon 200 cid inline 6 and 4 sp manual (3 + OD). Underpowered and a POS. Awful in the snow.

1981; 1981 Subaru GLF Hardtop, blue. Underpowered and noisy flat 4, all 71 hp of it but solid and creak free. Economical but weak brakes, paint and exhaust. Excellent in the winter despite FWD only.

1988; 1988 Honda CRX, silver. Fast, fun, reliable and very economical. Only my back didn't like it.

1993; 1992 Toyota Celica GT Coupe, turquoise. Only used car I bought and a superb one. Kept it 6 years with no issues. It had the power package, cruise and sunroof.

Came with 15" alloys and rear spoiler in 92 and just looked great.

1999; 1999 Honda Accord DX, dark blue. What a superb low profile machine that car was. Powertrain was in a class of its own. Didn't even a light bulb blew.

2004; 2005 Toyota Corolla CE package C, dark blue. Smaller than the Accord but has more equipement. Classy looks and very refined overall. Kind of a cheap Volvo or Mercedes, if they'd make any. But Honda is a head over Toyota in the engine/transmission department, road poise and tracking as well. OTOH, Toy is generally superior in comfort/insulation and oil changes are a snap.

Biggest issues I had on all these great cars are rattles. I spent countless hours on all of them trying (and not necesserally succeeding) to silence rattles.

Here's my list:

1984 VW Jetta-- old rabbit shape with 4 headlights. Ran it until 250K miles and sold it.

1992 VW Jetta-- Last year they made that style. Ran it to 250K miles and sold it.

1998 Toyota Tacoma 2wd Reg. Cab. --Great truck, but wanted more fuel efficient ride.

1992 Toyota Tercel 4spd -- Ran it up to 150K miles engine started falling apart. Traded it.

2005 Corolla LE --First new car ever. Love it so far.

73 vw bug, my first car. it had an awesome candy apple red metallic flake paint job that got compliments everywhere I went. custom interior and wheels, it was a great looker but slow as could be since it had the stock motor. we had alot of fun in it though.

88 mr2. supercharged, t-tops, white, loaded. beat alot of v8's with that 4cyl much to their suprise. great fun, besides racing I'd rally thru dirt roads and have a blast drifting sideways thru turns and got it airborne going over bumps. once on a steep railroad crossing I went "dukes of hazzard" at 60mph over it and naturally ground the pavement on the other side with the front end which gave me and my girlfriend a good laugh. being a young idiot in highschool I put that car thru hell yet it held up.

90 honda civic. red hatchback in college with custom wheels and dark tint, it looked great but was very slow. I put a 1,000w audio system in it with 10" subs that would vibrate items off people's walls when I drove by. no one around ever heard 10's sound so good but Ive since paid the price for it with ringing in my ears so no more systems for me.

74 gmc sierra. black longbed truck in college, rebuilt 350 with loping cam, headers, edelbrock intake & filter, holley 650 carb, 350turbo trans, positrack rearend, dual 3" magnaflow exhaust and all terrain tires. that thing was a blast to drive, tons of fun. gas mileage was around 5mpg. lol

90 chevy sprint. supercharged 3cyl red 2dr hatchback, had alot of pep and a throaty v6 sound for such a small motor. suprisingly fun to drive.

97 ford escort. black 4dr base model, married and we didnt enjoy the car since it wasnt loaded but it got us where we needed to go and looked nice until it was stolen and driven in the woods to hide it. I followed the guy home so he didnt get to drive anything after that. the idiot broke out of jail and was later caught so now he has more time to serve. the car had scrapes and dents all over it and the exhaust was damaged from being driving off road so we sold it.

01 corolla. this time we bought a car loaded and have loved it despite having numerous stops at the dealer at first thanks to toyota quality going downhill. we drove it for years until our divorce so now even though it runs perfect Im thinking of selling it since it reminds me of her.

I thought Ive had alot of cars until seeing some of these lists.

1946 Plymouth , 1950 Ford , 1955 Chevy , 1955 Ford Sunliner , 1954 Olds 98 , 1956 Olds 98 , 1958 Triumph TR3 , 1961 Olds F-85 , 1963 Olds F-85 , 1964 pontiac GTO , 1965 pontiac Bonneville 2dr hardtop , 1963 Buick Riviera , 1934 Ford Coupe , 1966 Buick Riviera , 1965 Mustang convert , 1967 Pontiac Tempest , 1975 AMC Pacer , 1975 Chevy El Camino , 1976 Odrs Cutlass Supreme 2dr ht , 1977 Pontiac Sunbird , 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix , 1978 Ford Mustang , 1980 Nissan pickup , 1982 Chevy pickup ,1991 Camaro , 1991 Chevy pickup , 2003 Corolla LE and probably a dozen others I can't remember. I wish still had about 3 of those cars I've owned now....I'd retire...LOL. Anyway I'm older and maybe a little smarter now and drive a Corolla , with gas here now at $2.60 per gal and probably will be $3.00 this summer I think the Corolla is the right choice , it was different when gas was 32.9 per gal.

2005 Kia Spectrum?

Max

Gosh, Larry, how did you guess? default_wink

WOW default_ohmy My list is short, so I'll tell a little story for each!

1988: 1984 Pontiac Acadian (Canuck version of the Chevette). Unlike Bob Levine, when I look back, it wasn't a POS. Sure it was sluggish (I unfortunately had an automatic), but it never caused me too much problems. Bought for $2K, kept for 3 yrs, minimal maintenance, 0$ repairs, trraded-in for $300

1991: Brand new VW Jetta, 5 sp manual, sunroof, $12K. I loved this car, very responsive, you could turn on a dime, I regret that we sold it. Sold it for $3k in 2001 when my husband needed a truck

1999: Nissan Altima, 5 sp manual, 4 year rental. I hated it, it was too big, unmaneouvrable (especially parking, horrible turning radius), didn't feel the road like the Jetta. Did not renew lease.

2003 (march): New Century navy blue stroller. I'm just messing with you guys default_biggrin I was without a car for 2 months, which made me realise two things. 1. We are very dependant on our cars. 2. We use our cars a lot for nothing, when we could walk.

2003 (may): 1990 Ford Festiva LX, (LX = luxary LOL) $1200, 40 MPG. I still have this car and enjoy driving it. I enjoy the versatility of the hatch, the road responsivness, the simplicity of the construction (cheap to fix). I still have this one, I am planning to up grade to 13" wheel for the winter.

2005 (march): 2005 Corolla CE, B package. Only time will tell if I like it or not! Up to date I like it a lot , it feels like driving a small car, very manouvrable, yet big inside. Just a few grudges: still figuring out the clutch after 3000 miles, find the seats too short no support under the knees, Goodyear Integrity tires and rain don't mix

2005 Kia Spectrum?

It definitely ain't a CELICA... as u all already know default_sad

Sad part about cars going extinct in America is that they continue getting sold in the rest of the world..

FJ cruiser is one example... It stopped in USA in mid 80s but the rest of the world continued seeing newer shapes...

Max

FJ Cruiser is back:

http://toyota.com/vehicles/future/fj_cruiser/index.html

Nope, no Celica for me, though the Scion tC is certainly a close match for one, right downto the modified Camry engine. I think I'll be sticking with Corollas for a while, though.

That new FJ cruiser is an abomination. Why couldn't they come up with a much simpler, more basic utility vehicle (notice I didn't say "sport" utility vehicle) to compete directly with the Jeep Wrangler? Make it 4 cylinder, preferably a diesel, simple drivetrain WITHOUT an automatic transmission option, no big frills, just basic creature comforts and safety items. Make it cheap -- about the price of a Corolla CE. The only options availabe should be A/C and a simple AM/FM/CD stereo. Cruise control should be standard equipment, as it should be on ALL vehicles.

Also make it with a longer wheelbase, like that new extended wheelbase Wrangler. This new FJ Cruiser will be a big, expensive, overpowered and ponderous POS.

Being young (still in college), I've only had 2 cars:

1995 Ford Taurus SHO: For those of you who don't know, this was the cream of all mid-size sedans. 220 HP/200 ft-lb Yamaha engine, 5-speed manual transmission, factory Bose sound system with sub, wicked comfortable seats, twin exhaust, and mie was a beautiful deep red. It could keep pace with a Mustang GT for a while too. I loved this car to death, then some idiot rear-ended me, and that was the end of it.

1999 Chevy Prizm: Realized I couldn't get another SHO because they are getting old at this point in time, so I got this, and it's been nothing but trouble (grr...). First the clutch went, then the struts died somehow, followed by the evap canister and a loss of power / mileage, and now my AC system died. BUT when it's working well, I really like it, and since I do all the work on this car myself, I've only been out something like $600 in repairs.

I'd really like to have another '95 SHO, but I guess you just have to move on some times.
