  1. Great tip -- I'll give it a try next time I wash my Corolla. It's been a couple of years since the last wash so it's about due.
  2. Great video! Fortunately my 2003 Corolla has not had any similar issues. It is now over 10 years old and has only 89,000 miles. I'm wondering if that engine will ever require any repairs? Oooops...maybe I shouldn't have said that!

  4. My own '03 Corolla LE was rear-ended on I-95 in Wilmington, DE two years ago -- June '10. It did just over $5,000 damage but the insurance company repaired the car. Repairs involved new bumpers on both ends, a new right rear quarter panel, new rear panel, new trunk lid, paint and stuff like badges. All replacement parts were OEM since the aftermarket ones were higher priced! There were no issues with the unibody frame being bent or anything -- the car was driven home almost 50 miles after the accident and for a week afterward waiting to take it in for repair. No glass broken at all. Your accident is much worse but I am still amazed that the car held up so well, same as mine. Hope you enjoy the 2012 and it will be interesting to see how you like it as you get used to it. That steering wheel is interesting. I'm just going to keep driving my '03 as long as I can and even though it's going to be 10 years old in Sept. of this year, it still doesn't have 85,000 miles on it yet!
  5. Where can I get braided stainless steel brake lines for my '03 Corolla? What is needed to install them? Brake work is one area of auto maintenance I haven't explored -- yet, but I'm willing to give it a try!
  6. A lot of steering issues are actually driver technique. Most people tend to grip steering wheels too tightly. I find that a nice, easy, almost loose grip at 10 and 2 is best under most conditions. When driving in strong, turbulent crosswinds, resisting the temptation to grip the wheel hard will tend to reduce over-controlling. The only vehicle with EPS I've ever driven was a 2010 Honda Civic I had rented while my '03 Corolla was in the collision shop for repairs after an accident last year. I didn't get much of an opportunity to drive the Civic on the highway, but I found the EPS to be quite liveable, it just took a while to get used to the fact that the steering seemed a lot "faster" than on my Corolla.
  7. I have a 2003 Corolla LE. About a week ago, the cassette adapter I had been using to play my iPod thru the stereo system failed to eject after many attempts. In my frustration, I extracted it forcibly using a pair of pliers. I can only imagine that now my cassette unit is pretty much trash. So, how do I go about replacing the entire unit? I don't really need a cassette deck, a unit with a good quality AM/FM stereo with CD player and perhaps even XM would be great. Any suggestions? What is the procedure for removal/replacement of the deck? How do I fill the hole in the dash after doing so? Are there kits to adapt a new unit to one that looks more or less factory-installed? I have ZERO experience in working with automotive stereo units. Any and all help will be appreciated, and PLEASE feel free to talk down and explain things in intricate detail, as I have no idea what I'm doing.
  8. If you're worried about the oil becoming oxidized or contaminated before you use it, just pour it into an empty spare 1-qt. bottle. Until recently, I've been doing all my own oil changes, using the 5-qt. jug of Mobil 1 5W30. Always tightly capped; never noticed any difference in the oil. With an expensive oil like Mobil 1, the cost savings of the large jug are significant over buying individual quart bottles. With a cheaper oil, perhaps not so much. BTW I had one jug that got lost in the clutter of my garage, and since it was, by then, over 2 years old, I just used it in my lawn mower. I also use it to lube my bicycle chain. However, it doesn't make a very good salad dressing.
  9. I can't really say what I think of it at this point. I guess I'd have to examine one in person. The front-end seems alright to me, but I'm not so sure I like the rear treatment. I don't like spoilers on cars, as I think the only thing they "spoil" is the car's appearance. Do they have any actual effect when driving at highway speeds? If so, what is it? I think the best looking Corolla by far is the 9th generation -- like my '03. Just saying -- your mileage will vary, of course.
  10. I've seen some painted wheel covers and they looked like crap. Really ruined the appearance of the car. Just keep them the original color, keep them clean, and save up for some alloy wheels. My '03 Corolla LE came with steel wheels and the plastic covers, but I knew I'd be keeping the car long term, so I immediately bought a set of the OEM alloys on eBay. That was one good choice that has paid off well over the years. I've never seen a plastic cover that lasted more than a couple of years, particularly if you live in an area that gets winter weather.
  11. On June 14, I took a Plymouth Voyager up the rear of my '03 Corolla. It was doing maybe 20 MPH by the time it connected, and I got pushed into the Mazda MPV I had just milliseconds before had avoided rear-ending myself when traffic "bunched up" near a choke/merge point. The rear-ender did $5K worth of damage to my Corolla -- just $2K short of totaling it, according to my insurance company. My Corolla was repaired. BTW no injuries to myself or the girl that hit me; the lady in the MPV I struck at probably < 3 MPH was taken to the hospital by ambulance, but I never heard anything from them. In the case of your minor rear-ender, I doubt anything more than possible displacement of the rear bumper cover is likely.
  12. Sounds like this car had the heck beat out of it and was poorly maintained by the previous owner(s). I hope you didn't pay too much for it.
  13. My 2003 Toyota Corolla LE with 71,800 miles has developed a sudden driver's side window issue. The glass is "shifting" forward, mainly when being raised. I took the car in to the local Toyota stealer, C. F. Schwartz, in Dover, Delaware. They told me about the window bolt recall and performed that service, but told me this morning that the problem wasn't fixed and that there was a problem with the motor/regulator. They want to replace it with an aftermarket motor/regulator to the tune of $290; the OEM unit with installation would be closer to $500. My car is eight years old, and in spite of it's low mileage, has been driven at least to work and back each day, so that driver's side window has probably seen at least as many up/down cycles as any other Corolla with up to double the mileage. Is it reasonable that this thing should fail on me, or is it something that should have lasted the life of the car? Just wondering. Another factor is that the car was in a fairly bad chain-reaction rear-end collision on June 14. I was rear-ended on I-95 in Wilmington, probably hit at around 20 MPH by a Chrysler T&C minivan. I was then pushed into the rear-end of a Mazda MPV van, probably at 5 MPH or less -- front end damage was superficial by comparison to rear. The right rear quarter panel, the rear panel, trunklid, and both bumper shells were replaced, along with a lot of small stuff. A small crease in the left rear quarter was repaired. Total collision damage was over $5,000 -- about 2K short of "totalling" the car. Could the collision have had anything to do with the window problem? BTW I was uninjured in the collision, although the lady passenger in the Mazda MPV was hauled out on a backboard and taken by ambulance to the hospital -- in spite of the fact that the "secondary" collision was no more than what you'd get backing into another car in a parking lot. The front compression struts on my car were not even compressed -- the registration holes were in perfect alignment. All I lost was my $250 collision deductable and about eight bucks a day when I upgraded my rental from a 2010 Honda Civic (a POS) to a 2011 Chevy Impala -- a VERY nice ride indeed!
  14. I'm having the same problem, only with the right front (passenger side) tire. Appears to lose 5 - 7 psi every week or so. Tires are Goodyear Assurance Triple-Treds, approximately 5 years old with maybe 50K miles on them. Rotated every 7 - 10K miles.
