Corolla 2010 Oil Consumption

By corolla2010, September 18, 2012

I have a corolla 2010. bought it new . I have an intensive oil consumption. First noticed on 10000km there wasnt any oil left in the engine ( and it wasnt even time for the first scheduled service) i took it to Toyota dealers and they checked and put 5.20 oil and said it should work fine. They were saying like maybe when they gave me the car they forgot to check how much oil there is in the car so a probability was that there wasnt enough oil to start with.( big BS) Later crossed maybe 2000 km and it lost 300g. took it again. they changed the oil again. next on my 5000 k no oil again. I took it again to the dealers and they changed the oil pump and turbine and said it should work fine now. Now my car has passed 21 000 km and still is burning oil. They keep testing what could go wrong and wait for my warranty to expire so later when i will really need to change the engine they will charge me. Does anyone has any recommendations on what to do? I`m not from the US but here it seems like they are ripping my money. Just to add up. the car wasnt even driven alot ( due to my absence from home) and still it is burning oil. Can someone please help, and maybe direct me who i can contact so that i can fix this problem. Thank you

Where are you located? Depending on your country - there might be a way for Toyota to get involved in an arbitration process. Other than that - there are Toyota Corporate contact numbers you can try. Same with your local consumer advocates (here in the US and Canada it is Better Business Bureau).

Very unusual for that generation to consume oil, though in some extreme cases, anything is possible. The shop should have started a oil consumption test. Basically, have you come in at regular intervals to monitor oil levels. After they do this, they will know the rate of oil consumption. If it is above a certain consumption rate - then they need do work. Depending on your location - that could involve a 3rd party arbitration process - to discuss how to best handle this. Repair, rebuild, or replace - the engine or even the entire car.

I`m located in Macedonia on the Balkans. The dealers are only testing the vehicle and the oil consumption but they are not doing anything to fix it. They continuously say that i should take the car for a service every 1000 km. For 2 years they have noticed that there is above normal oil consumption but they dont know what to do next. They keep saying like they are waiting for a response from the manufacturer on how to proceed but as i stated they are not doing anything for 2 years.Maybe they are waiting for the warranty to expire and then to change the engine and make me pay on my own. I tried the customer service in our country about speeding up the process of finding out what they should do and fix the problem, but they are not educated on how to proceed ( very strange) and they give me the same answer like maybe we should still wait. I`m not able to drive my car long distance due to fear of lost of oil while running. But maybe that will be the only option left from me to do. so that they will have to speed up the process and find whats wrong. Otherwise i contacted a legal department in our country and they said we need to find out who the manufacturer is for our country and who brings toyota in Macedonia. If you have any info on that or maybe the main customer service for Europe i would appreciate it alot.

Thanks

Assuming you've already exhausted the information on your local Toyota website.

If so - then you'll have to elevate it to Toyota Europe

Beyond that, not much you can do. Laws and options are different from country to country. Some have stronger consumer protection laws or more options for the end consumer to pursue. If you don't hear anything from Toyota Corporate offices in Europe - then you might have no choice but to seek legal council. Good Luck.

Ok .thanks for the info i`ll try anything at this point. Hope it all works out. thanks again

It was very detrimental to let the engine run at such low oil levels in the first place... W-30 oil may have been better to start with, especially in hot weather conditions.

There is a similar problem with Toyota's 2.4 engine. Several models with the 2.4 may be using too much oil. In TSB SB002411 and SB009411 issued on Aug. 11 2011, the problem is said to be traced to the piston assembly. Replacing the pistons and rings should solve the problem. Affected models are the 2007-9 Scion tCs and the 2008-9 Scion xB as well as these Toyotas: 2006-8 RAV4, 2007-8 Solara, 2007-9 Camry, 2007-11 Camry Hybrid, 2009 Corolla and 2009 Matrix.

There is in fact a surprising number of such cases reported with the 10th generation Corolla's 1.8 2ZR-FE. Toyota does claim that up to one liter of oil comsumed in 1000 Kms is acceptable.

All there is for now is a TSB for ECM recalibration: http://www.toyotapart.com/1ZR-FE_ENGINE_OIL_CONSUMPTION_T-SB-0145-08.pdf
