It's been three months, so the Vehicle Reliability Survey results for the S40 and V50 have been updated again.

Repair rates, in terms of successful repair trips per 100 vehicles per year:

2003: 19, much better than average, but very small sample size

2005: 34, better than average, adequate sample size

2006: 62, about average, marginal sample size

2007: 31, better than average, very small sample size

2009: 58, about average, small sample size

More participants needed to provide precise results and include more model years.

The latest Car Reliability Survey results were recently posted. The reported number of repair trips per 100 cars per year for the Toyota Corolla:

1999: 96, better than average

2001: 44, better than average

2003: 28, better than average

2005: 54, average but close to "better than average"

2006: 33, better than average

2007: 27, better than average

2009: 31, better than average

Except for the 2005 and 2009, the sample sizes are small or even very small, so these results are asterisked and visible only to participants on the site itself.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years from 1995 on.

We now have a separate results page for each model that includes the results for competitors. The one for the Toyota Corolla:

We have updated results for the Corolla to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2009: 31, better than average

2007: 26, better than average, small sample size

2006: 36, better than average

2005: 61, about average, but results for other years suggest actual repair frequency is lower

2003: 45--for this year and the two below, better than average, small sample size

2001: 45

1999: 79

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years from 1995 on.

As always, additional participants would help us provide better results.

Recently enhanced the related repair history survey so that it can (optionally) be used as a personal car maintenance record.

As always, more participants would be helpful. Updated Car Reliability Survey results in May.

We've updated the results for the Corolla to include owner experiences through June 30, 2010. Other sources of car reliability information won't cover the more recent months until the summer or even fall of next year.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2010: no repairs reported yet, 23 cars participating

2009: 27

2007: 13

2006: 29

2005: 27

2004: 10

2003: 64

2002: 93

2001: 92

1999: 66

1998: 74

Decent sample sizes for the 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2009. Small and even small sample sizes for the others, so they're less precise.

The 2001 and 2002 are about average--possibly a factor of small sample sizes--while the others are all better than average, even much better.

We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

Because existing sources of auto reliability information left much to be desired, in late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research at TrueDelta.com. TrueDelta reports absolute stats like "trips to the shop" that make the differences between cars much clearer. Results are updated four times a year, so any significant changes in a model's reliability become apparent quickly.

Thanks to the help of many forums, there are nearly 23,000 vehicles signed up so far, including 226 Corollas. But more are needed. So I'm grateful to Dave Z. for giving me permission to post here.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results for free.

We've updated the results for the Corolla to include owner experiences through September 30, 2010. Other sources of car reliability information won't cover the months since April until the summer or even fall of next year.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2010: no repairs reported yet, 30 cars participating

2009: 27

2007: 11

2006: 28

2005: 31

2004: 29

2003: 46

2002: 101

2001: 117

2000: 28

1999: 64

1998: 67

1995: 76

Decent sample sizes for the 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010. Small and even small sample sizes for the others, so they're less precise.

The 2001 and 2002 are about average--possibly a factor of small sample sizes--while the others are all better than average, even much better.

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

In the case of the 2009 Coroll, the percentage with no repairs is about 81, and the percentage of lemons is less than one.

Toyota Corolla Lemon-odds and Nada-odds

We'll have further updates in February and May. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

We have some new pages that display all reported repairs by problem area:

From this page it's possible to select a different model year or specify a problem area.
